The Lazio region

Volcanic lakes, mountains, ravines, vineyards and olive groves characterize Latium's landscape. Rich with archeological sites, Latium also offers skiing, swimming, and a host of water sports. Most visitors never see much more than Rome.

Though that famous city is an unforgettable experience, the splendour (both man-made and natural) of the rest of the region merits both time and thorough investigation. The eruption of four different volcanoes has provided Latium with fertile soil, hot springs, marshes, and hill towns of unprecedented beauty.

Rome / Central Rome area

Vatican area: will surprise the visitor with its unique charm, thanks to the majesty of S. Peter Square with the famous Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Raphael Rooms, the Vatican Gardens and the Sistine Chapel which draw pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.

The Vatican is situated on the site where S. Peter was martyred and buried, it became the residence of the popes. The Vatican is principally composed by St. Peter’s Square with the famous Basilica, the Vatican Palaces and the beautiful gardens. Don’t forget to visit Castel sant’Angelo, the big castle built by the Emperor Hadrian , which became later and old papal residence.

ST. PETER SQUARE
The square was begun by Bernini in 1656 and completed in 1667. The colonnades have been designed as two arcs of a circle like in a gesture of welcome extended to the pilgrims of the world. Bernini wanted to give an effect of surprise by enclosing the square through the colonnades so that the basilica was hidden to the view of the visitor until the entrance in the square. At the centre of the square stands an obelisk brought from Alexandria of Egypt in the 1st century under Caligola’s reign. The two fountains are attributed to Carlo Maderno and Bernini.

S. Peter’s Basilica is the greatest church in the world. The church is composed by 450 statues, 500 columns, 50 altars and it has a capacity to hold 60.000 people. Few are disappointed when they enter the sumptuously decorated basilica, whose interior contain 11 chapels, 45 altars, and precious works of art. The Michelangelo’s vast dome, affectionately called by the Romans “ il cupolone”, gives unity to the interior of the basilica.

VATICAN MUSEUMS
They represent the greatest collection of antiques in the world. The museums are housed in the buildings erected by the various Popes from the 13 century. The palace's estimated 1,400 rooms, chapels, and galleries contain nearly 5 miles (8 km) of displays. In 1503 Julius II started to display a few classical work of art in the Belvedere Court; since then on, Popes continued and completed to gather and to select the greatest treasures of art. The collections are displayed in geographical and chronological order and cover ancient, modern and contemporary art works. For the interest and diversity of their treasures, the Vatican museums are a must for everyone visiting Rome.

VATICAN GARDENS
The beautiful Vatican Gardens are in Italian style, to which are joined the French gardening austerity and lively bushes in English style. The area is also embellished by many fountains; for example the “Fontana del Sacramento e dell’Aquilone” by Vasanzio and “Fontana della Galera” by Carlo Maderno.
