Description: This district or Rione begins north-east of the tallest hill in Rome, the Esquilino and from which it naturally takes its name. It is one of the most comfortable areas to stay in Rome due to its very central location and access to a whole number of services. Esquilino is a very commercial and multi-ethnic district a fact that is reflected in a multitude of ethnic shops and restaurants in the area. Esquilino is separated from the Rione Monti by the thoroughfare Via Merulana that joins the two Basilicas of San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore. The district is very close to the Estación Termini in a very busy area for traffic and commercial activity. However there are many calm residential streets to walk around which offer a wonderful variety of typical taverns, bars and theatres such as the Teatro Brancaccio or the Ambra Jovinelli. It is a very large area, whose centre can be identified by the main square the plaza Vittorio Emanuele, commonly known as the Piazza Vittorio. The square with its typical arches is the only example in Rome of Piemonte's architecture, the region belonging to the Savoia royal family and Italy's last monarchs. In the gardens around the Piazza Vittorio are the visible remains of the monumental fountain the work of Roman Emperor Alessandro Severo that have the function of collecting its water and supplying the aqueducts into the city with three channels. The garden also houses the “magical door”, the Puerta Magica, entrance to the home of Massimiliano II Palombara, the famous XVII Century Italian alchemist. Noteworthy and of further interest in this area are: • Santa Pudenziana Church • Piazza dell'Esquilino Obelisk • Arco di Gallieno • Auditorium di Mecenate • Tempio de Minerva Medica • Ipogeo degli Aureli • The church Santa Croce in Gesrusalemme • Porta Maggiore • Palazzo Brancaccio The last few decades have seen an intense amount of population migration in the area due to the proximity of the central train station the Termini and the installation of a number of social instituations. The metro stations closeby are Termini, Manzoni and Vittorio Emanuele on Line A and Cavour Line B, and trains and trams can be taken from Porta Maggiore.
