Why stay: this elegant area is quiet and close to the largest green park in the city centre.

Description: The district of Pinciano is located immediately north of the centre and is one of the greenest areas in Rome. Most of the surface area is covered by the Villa Borghese which extends over 80 hectares and is the citys third largest park. The area can be considered as an anthology of late classical and neo-baroque Roman architecture, and is quite a history album for modern architecture including buildings that date back to the Mussolini era and its typical rationalist style among others with facades imitating the classical style of embossed features and deco sculptures. Villa Borghese takes its name from the Borghese family, former owners of the park from 1580 onwards. The Italian government bought the land in 1901 for the Roman Town Hall to make into a public park. The park is home to numerous buildings and museums including the famous Galleria Borghese with exhibits of classic art as well as the works of Canova, Caravaggio and Rafaello. The area also includes the Bioparco, the Museum of zoology, the Casa del Cinema and the Cinema Dei Piccoli (the smallest cinema in the world). It is really worth visiting the Plaza de Siena, that has been hosting an equestrian competition since the 1980s and the Silvano Toti Globe Theatre, a reconstruction of the Shakespearean Globe Theatre in London. To the north of the park is the Parioli district; a new area that dates back to the beginning of the 1900s. It was established as a neighbourhood for the higher Roman classes and is quite evident from the number of beautiful villas with gardens. After the Second World War this area reached the height of its fame as the choice of residence for a great number of personalities from cinema and theatre and important industrial and financial magnates. In 2002 the Auditorium Parco della Musica was opened; a multi-functional complex that hosts large cultural and musical events. In the surrounding area is a park with the remains of an ancient Patrician villa that was discovered during the construction of the Auditorium. The largest mosque in Europe is also located in the area close by.
