Description: The name of this district comes from the Latin Castra Praetoria and during the Roman Empire it was the residence of the praetorian guards. It is an ideal location for young couples or groups of friends who want to enjoy Rome's night life to the full. Starting at the Estación Termini the area is divided into two: the monumental and residential districts. The former is the Piazza Esedra also known as the Piazza della Repubblica; Via Nazionale and Via Cavour, the major thoroughfares that lead traffic to the city's old town. This part of the city is home to the Terme di Diocleziano complex, the San Paolo dentro le mura church, and the Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri Basilica, the work of Miguel Ángel. A short distance from here is Rome's famous theatre, the Teatro dell' Opera. The other side of the district is more residential and built in typical XIX architecture – orthogonal floors and long, wide streets. Its main squares are: Piazza dei Cinquecento, opposite the Estación Termini, the Piazza Indipendenza, Piazza Fiume and Piazzale Porta Pia with its famous portal, well-known for the battle that ended the domain of Rome as a Papal State. The area is extremely tranquil and elegant, yet well frequented and the home of several ministries and offices as well as Rome's first university La Sapienza. It is the university part of the city, the bohemian district of San Lorenzo the abode of many students and artists and is full of bars and night clubs but also workshops and economical restaurants. The whole area is very well communicated since it is located alongside the Estación Termini. The nearest metro stops are: Termini, Barberini línea A as well as a number of bus lines leaving Termini. It is possible to walk from here to the rione Monti and the Esquilino.
