Description: Formerly much larger, this district Testaccio/Aventino has developed around the ancient port of Ripa Grande and was the first district to see the boats arriving along this stretch of the river. It is an area with a large number of monuments and archeological parks such as the Termas de Caracalla, where since 1937 there has been poetry and dance activities organized in the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. It is also home to the Puerta de San Sebastiano as well as the Piramide, the mausoleum built by the powerful judge Caio Cestio in 12 A.D. A huge district with a large number of monuments, if you are looking for a lively area, full of history and architecture but at the same time homely, this is the perfect place for you. In this district you will find one of the most well-known attractions in Rome: the Circo Massimo (Circus Maximus) the ancient Roman chariot racing stadium and the famous carving Bocca della Verità located under the portico of the church Santa Maria in Cosmedin that gives its name to the square where the church is located. Opposite is the Tempio di Vesta and nearby the Arco di Giano, which according to legend was where the twins who founded Rome Romulus and Remus were from. The church of San Giorgio al Velabro is located just behind. The area includes the Isla Tiberina that can be reached after crossing the River Tiber over the bridge puente Fabricio the oldest in Rome, built in 62 A.D. The Aventino hill is a great location to appreciate an all-inclusive view of a number of churches from the medieval area: Sant'Anselmo, Santi Bonifacio e Alessio and Santa Sabina with its orange garden the Jardín de los Naranjos, a beautiful terrace overlooking the city. The nearest metro stops are Piramide and Circo Massimo on Line B.
