The Lazio region
The Lazio area offers a variety of landscapes: beautiful beaches (Sabaudia, Gaeta, Sperlonga), regional parks (Castelli Romani, Treja Valley), lakes (Bracciano, Martignano, Vico, Nemi, Castel Gandolfo, Bolsena), medieval towns (Sutri, Nemi, Calcata) and archaeological sites (Ostia Antica, the ancient Roman port; Cerveteri famous for its Etruscan tombs). While in Rome one might want to plan a visit Tivoli only 15 km from Rome or to the nearby towns of the Castelli Romani: Albano Laziale, Ariccia, Castel Gandolfo (summer residence of the Pope), Colonna, Frascati, Genzano di Roma, Grottaferrata, Lanuvio, Lariano, Marino, Monte Compatri, Monte Porzio Catone, Nemi, Rocca di Papa, Rocca Priora, Velletri.
Rome / Appio Latino area
Rome needs no introduction, but a special feature near the flat is the Regional Park of the Old Appian Way. The Old Appian Way is the first and most famous of the ancient Roman roads, running from Rome to Campania and southern Italy. Begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus, the road originally ran 132 mi (212 km) to ancient Capua; by 244 BC it extended 230 mi (370 km) to the port of Brundisium (Brindisi) in Italy's heel. Built of smoothly fitted blocks of lava on a heavy stone foundation, the road provided a long-lasting surface for transporting merchandise to these seaports (and then by ship to Greece and the eastern Mediterranean). Remains can still be seen today. In 1784, Pope Pius VI built the new Appian Way from Rome to Albano, parallel with the old. Today the area around the Old Appian Way has become a Regional Park, which is possible to visit on foot, by bike or on the Archeobus (which you can catch at the Caffarella Park, a few minutes walk from the apartment). The Romans buried their dead outside the city along the Appian Way, putting up splendid monuments and tombs, remains of which are still standing. In the 3rd century, the Christians buried their dead in underground cemeteries, the catacombs, near the Appian Way. You may visit the catacombs on guided tours. Guides are friendly to kids (who feel like they’ve stepped into ancient Rome) and encourage questions. The Old Appian Way Park is a perfect spot for a picnic . And it's a great escape from the city - here it's open countryside, green fields and forests, birds and crickets, working farms with horses and goats, and it's quiet and peaceful.
How to get there

Guestbook
"Lovely bright, clean spacious apartment in ideal location. Bus terminus and metro station very close to hand. Everything you need within a short walk - quality shops, restaurants, supermarkets, cafes. Excellent for visiting the wonderful sites in central Rome but also lots to discover in the local area. We felt so much at home here that we felt more like locals rather than tourists just visiting! Balcony has a superb outlook and was a great place to relax and watch the buzz below. Irene was very welcoming and could not have been more helpful. We will most certainly be returning and would thoroughly recommend this apartment to others." Andrea S., U.K.
