The Lazio region

Lazio region is characteristically a monocentric region with Rome as the main centre of attraction. Lazio is also characterised by a wide range of landscapes and by extensive biodiversity.
The Rome / Central Rome area
Description of Rome:
Of all Italy's historic cities, it's perhaps Rome which exerts the most compelling fascination. There's more to see here than in any other city in the world, with the relics of over two thousand years of inhabitation packed into its sprawling urban area. You could spend a month here and still only scratch the surface. As a historic place, it is special enough; as a contemporary European capital, it is utterly unique.
For the traveller, there are the city's classical features, most visibly the Colosseum, and the Forum and Palatine Hill; but from here there's an almost uninterrupted sequence of monuments - from early Christian basilicas (St.Peter-Vatican, St. Maria Maggiore, St. Giovanni), Romanesque churches, Renaissance palaces, right up to the fountains and churches of the Baroque period, which perhaps more than any other era has determined the look of the city today.
Central Rome and Local Activities:
The RomaHouse Apartment is located in Vatican Area walking distance from Castel Sant'Angelo and Navona Square.
Castel Sant'Angelo was built in the early 2nd century by the Emperor Hadrian, as a monumental tomb for himself and his successors.
It is connected to the left bank of the Tiber by Ponte Elio, today's Ponte Sant'Angelo, decorated with ten marble statues of angels with the symbols of the passion of Christ, carved after a design by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The monument's fate was decided in 403, when the Emperor Honourius incorporated it into the city walls, making it into a bridgehead on the river. From the 13th century it became an "annexe" of the nearby Vatican, and Pope Nicholas III created the famous "Passetto di Borgo", a covered corridor connecting St. Peter's to the Castle.
Local Activities:
Shopping, nightlife, restaurants, artistic sites.
