The Lazio region

Lazio is dominated by its capital, the Eternal City, Rome. Since ancient Roman times the region has been an extension of the city, where noble Roman families created their own towns and the wealthy built their villas in the surrounding countryside. Lazio is a treasure trove of the remains of age old civilizations: bridges, churches, towers, villas, monasteries, aqueducts, arches. To the north of Rome are Etruscan sites and the tombs of Tarquinia, founded in the 12th century BC.

The ruins of Ostia Antica, a 4th century BC port city at the mouth of the Tiber are located west of the city, with delightful beaches nearby. East of Rome toward the mountains is Tivoli, a favourite retreat for the wealthy at the height of the Roman Empire. Visit the remains of Hadrian’s Villa, completed in 134 AD, and the beautiful fountains and gardens of the Villa d’Este.

The coast of southern Lazio contains some of the finest beaches in Italy. Much of the 30km of unspoiled broad sandy beaches leading south to the chic resort of Sabaudia is backed by National Park. Continuing southwards from there is the Ulyssses Coast, a blend of sandy beaches and rocky coves. This area is bisected by the ancient Via Appia, and contains the remnants of the vacation villas of such lovers of luxury and hedonism as the Emperors Nero, Tiberius and Domitian.

The location in the heart of Rome is simply the best. Live a real Rome experience. You are a short stroll to the Campo di Fiori where you can buy some of the most beautiful produce you will ever see. You are walking distances to all the major sites, to great boutique shopping, great restaurants, and intimate trattorias.

Enjoy one of Rome's best Gelato's just around the corner and also great pizzas. There is a health club just around the corner, too. Or, just walk. Walk to Piazza Navona, the Vatican, the Pantheon, hip Trastevere, elegant Via Giulia, the Forum, the Coliseum, and much more. If you don't want to walk, bus stops are near, frequent, and will take you anywhere.

"Lovely apartment in a great area for exploring Rome"

Everything about this apartment was lovely. The owners were friendly and helpful. We walked into central Rome easily and there are loads of good places to eat in Trastevere. We would definitely come and stay here again.

I am so glad that you were pleased with the apartment and your visit to Rome. We hope that you will, indeed, return soon. Thank you for writing.

"Great apartment in a wonderful part of Rome"

We spent a week in this excellent apartment in the heart of Trastevere. The apartment was spotless and spacious. We are a family of four and never felt it was cramped. We loved being in the heart of Trastevere - it's very atmospheric and full of great restaurants and shops. The restaurant immediately downstairs 'Il Duce' was a great start when we arrived late and hungry on our first night. Other great eateries nearby are Da Lucia and for the best pizza go to Dar Poeta (alhough you need to be prepared to wait a long time for a table at the latter as it is so popular). Families with very young children could possibly find it a little noisy as the nightlife goes on into the small hours but it wasn't a problem for us. There's free wi-fi (a tip for UK travellers - use to get access to the BBC website so you need never miss out on your 'Archers' fix whilst abroad). The only things we felt the apartment lacked were these British staples namely the electric kettle and toaster. However once we discovered the wonderful bakery in the adjoining street selling the best foccacia we have ever eaten we were able to wean ourselves off tea with toast and marmalade for breakfast for a few days.

I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. We have already added the tea kettle. We will follow your suggestion and add a Toaster, too. We hope to see you in Rome again soon.
