Our gite is located near Couhe in The Vienne, Poutou-Charentes and central to many attractions. Our hamlet is about 300 metres from the village of Romagne which has a restaurant, bar, co-op shop, hairdresser and post office. A five minute walk takes you there where you will find friendly people and a relaxing atmosphere. A short drive and you can be at Monkey Valley. You can have a swim in the above-ground pool (pool summer only) or just relax in the garden, have a B-B-Q or take a bike ride.
Ideal for families or a romantic getaway for two. Our "micro-climate" is reputed to one of the best in France and the night sky the clearest.
By car 35 minutes takes you to the city of Poitiers with it's medieval Cathedral and churches, restaurants and night-life. Within easy reach is Cognac for tours of the distilleries. The Vallee des Singes (Monkey Valley) is a few minutes drive away. The ancient port of La Rochelle is within driving distance for a day at the seaside. We live next door so we are always available should you need advice or assistance.

The Poitou-Charentes region
Romagne is 10 Kms from Couhe and was a Roman settlement, hence "Rom". The medieval church was built from the 11th to the 14th century but it's thought that a Roman church stood on the site. Seven Roman legions camped in the vicinity. The area was part of the old Kingdom of Aquitaine and a local "patois" is still to be heard here. Romagne is in the Southern part of La Vienne close to the Claine and Charente rivers.
Poitiers is the administrative centre of the Poitou-Charentes and most of the centre was built in the middle ages. A days shopping there is a must, there is so much of interest there that even gentlemen enjoy it! A big Sunday morning market takes place each week where anything from oysters to handbags can be purchased. Don't forget the Samaur wine region bordering on Poitiers and while traveling along the local lanes you may see the wild deer.
Our Co-ordinates for GPS are:- 46.272766 N 0.306815 E
We are about 5 minutes drive from Monkey Valley (Vallee des Singes) which kids of all ages love.
Tuesday morning is market day in Civray, another old town not far away. Play tennis? We have tennis courts in Romagne.
Want to fish? Angling in the local rivers and lakes is brilliant, big Carp, Bream, Pike, Roach and others. We can provide fishing tackle free of charge. Golf isn't too far away. The market towns of Couhe and Gencay are only a few minutes drive away
There is an excellent restaurant in Romagne just a few minutes walk away, but parking is easy in the village if you want to go by car, and you can park opposite the restaurant.
The land here is flat and good for cycling, the original prairie. Futuroscope theme park is close as is the ostrich farm and a vegetable maze, snake centre, birds of prey centre and crocodiles. The horse fair in Romagne is on the first weekend in August.
The journey by train from Poitiers to Paris is 1 hour 29 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes and great for a day trip

"very comfortable gite, lovely area"
The gite was very clean and tidy and well equipped. English owners live next door and were friendly and helpful throughout the holiday. They set up a spare bed in the bedroom for our daughter. They brought us home grown vegetables and a welcome basket and let us pick some fruit and vegetables whenever we wanted. Our young daughter really enjoyed the swimming pool which was a good size for her to splash about in.
Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to review our gite.

We enjoyed our stay from start to finish. The gite was like a home from home a very well equipped and comfortable. We used to BBQ on several occasions to make the most of the good weather. The area is good for easy walks and the bikes provided enabled us to explore a bit further afield without always using our car. The Auberge du Marronnier in the village centre served good food at reasonable prices and Boulangerie was within easy walking distance for daily bread and croissants. The owners John and Valerie were always on hand to provide useful tips and ideas for things to do and see. The copious supply of delicious tomatoes from their garden kept us well provided during our 2 weeks stay.
It was a great pleasure to welcome you to our gite. Many thanks for the excellent review.

"Comfortable well equipped Gite"
This gite was excellent. It was extremely well equipped. It also had a barbeque, and bikes which is what we were looking for. On the edge of a village which you could walk /cycle to in the rning for fresh croissants.... Very quiet area ,no noisy/busy roads lots of places to walk and cycle. Beautiful garden with chairs and loungers for relaxing. John and Valerie make you feel very welcome and are on hand if you need them without being obtrusive in any way. We had a wonderful supply of tomatoes, cucumber and courgettes from trheir garden which was really nice. I would recommend this gite to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday with amenities nearby. If I go back to that area of France I would definitely stay at this gite again as it is the best one I have stayed in.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday in the Poitou-Cherantes and many thanks for the kind review.

"Great holiday retreat"
The GPS coordinates (provided on the website) take you directly to the doorstep of the Lime Tree Gite. There was a welcome gift on our arrival – bread, wine, vegetables and milk in the fridge. We’ve had a regular supply of vegetables from John & Valerie’s garden throughout our stay. The gite is very nice & clean and well maintained with all the facilities one would need while on holiday – washing machine, satellite tv, wi-fi, microwave oven, toaster, fridge... We were given fresh towels every 2-3 days and had separate sets for the bathroom and pool. Although we brought our own, John & Valerie also left a fumigator in the bedroom to ensure mosquito- free nights for their guests. The swimming pool is well looked after and clean. It is also useful that the pool is above the ground and the ladder can be removed, as we were calm about our little boy (2.5 y.o.) exploring the garden without the risk of him falling into the pool. In general there was plenty of space in the garden to play and run around, plus inflatable toys in the pool. So I would definitely recommend this place for families with small children. The location of the gite is reasonably convenient. There are a few small supermarkets in the nearby villages, a bigger supermarket E.Leclerk in Poitiers (30 min drive) and a Co-op shop just around the corner from the Gite (5 min walk). We were looking for entertainment suitable for small children and had a few nice days out in the Valley of monkeys, Aquarium (in La-Rochelle). We found that Futuroscope is more suitable for older children because of the height/age restrictions on most of the rides. John and Valerie don’t ask for security deposit and don’t require their guests to clean after themselves on departure. This was very convenient and this is another big bonus of this place, as you don’t have to prepare extra money (and await return of the deposit afterwards) and don’t have to frantically clean the house the night before your leave. We’ve had a lovely stay in the Lime Tree Gite and have already recommended it to our friends and family.
Many thanks for staying in our gite and for the lovely review

We arrived at Lime Tree Gite and were met by the owner John Bell, with a smile that would lighten the darkest room and knew that we had chosen the right place for a relaxing holiday. In the kitchen was a complimentary bottle of wine, as well as bread and fresh produce from the garden (to which we were treated throughout the week) The gite is an an idyllic location and is perfect in every way, well maintained, beautifully furnished and with all mod cons, including a swimming pool, free wi-fi and even satellite tv, for a night in. There is an obvious civic pride in Romagne, which means the village remains pretty and well kept, with a restaurant and boulangerie within a pleasant walk of the gite. Whilst a car is essential (though we did find that there is a bus to Poitiers) there are places to walk and for those wanting more, John and Valerie provide two bicycles on which to explore further afield. One evening, we drove the 15 minutes to the La Vieille Fromagerie restaurant at Brux, and would highly recommend this for a special, yet inexpensive treat. For us, Lime Tree Gite was perfect in every way and John and Valerie the perfect hosts. Don't go to Romagne if you want night life, but we enjoyed it so much we booked for two weeks next year before we left! Thank you John and Valerie
It's so good of you to take the time to write such a nice 5 star review. Many thanks and we look forward to your return visit next year.

Our stay in this gite was one we found totally satisfying. The gite was very clean and comfortable. Our hosts provided us with everything we could have possibly wanted. They had thought of everything and their hospitality was exceptional making our stay in this beautiful part of France something memorable. The gite is well situated as there are many places to visit within one hour to an hour and a quarter away and it is so pleasant to return to a quiet and relaxing environment. A very good auberge serving good meals is within walking distance.
Many thanks for such a lovely review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay here.

"Rural France at its best"
The GPS took us right to their doorstep which was quite something given that Lime Tree Gite is well of the beaten track. John and Valerie settled us into a very comfortable self contained wing of the house with all the facilities you would wish to see in a well run gite. The property is clearly a very old building in the traditional fermette style of the region and our hosts provided all the means including a swimming pool to relax and enjoy oneself in a tranquil surrounding. The Commune of Romagne is a typical hamlet with very few amusements in which a knowledge of French would be very helpful! We much enjoyed the company of John and Valerie and slept very well in comfortable and clean accommodation and we don't ask for much more than that!
Thank you for the review and we look forward to your next visit later this year.
