La Grange is a house on two and a half levels for six to eight people. It is the original barn of the mas; the goats had only just left the bottom floor when we started restoration!

The entrance at road level leads into the kitchen and dining area, with a shower room behind. Above, there is a large mezzanine with two single beds. The living room, with a magnificent view towards the Tour de Brison in the south, is through a stone archway from the kitchen. For larger parties there is a very comfortable double sofa-bed. Just in case you choose to take our holidays out of season, there is a large fireplace for the long winter evenings.

The two main double bedrooms are downstairs, where the goats used to be! There is also a luxury bathroom and a "cave" complete with washing machine.

Outside, there is a large stone-paved patio with a walled flower garden; it is fully equipped with furniture and a BBQ.

There is a large 15x5m swimming pool and jacuzzi and gym. The gym features a treadmill, cross-trainer, bike, stepper and rower and, for the really masochistic, a multi-gym weights machine.

A free wireless ADSL connection is available in.

We have an organic vegetable garden so fresh produce is always available. In addition, we provide evening meals when required - can be very good on the night that you arrive.

The Rhone/French Alps region

L'Elze is on the edge of the Ardechois Cevennes at an altitude of 550m. In summer the normal temperature is in the high 20s or low 30s. Because we are reasonably high there is usually a cooling breeze.

Rocles

The closest town to the Mas de L'Elze is Largentiere, dating back to medieval times, retaining its walls, gates and ancient winding cobbled streets. En route from there to Aubenas, you will find Balazuc, designated one of the most picturesque villages of France. And it's not the only wonderful village to see - try Thines and Labeaume, for example.

The majestic gorges of the Ardeche, famous for their natural beauty, are a short drive away. Closer by are the valleys of the Beaume, Drobie and Chassezac, less well-known, but no less beautiful. The mountain range of the Tanargue forms a backdrop to the setting sun in the west. An unusual natural phenomenon to be found nearby is the Bois de Paiolive, a labyrinth of white rocks eroded into strange and fantastic shapes.

You can enjoy the countryside while relaxing in the sun with a glass of local wine. Alternatively, should you wish to get a little closer to nature there is lots to do.

First of all, you can hike or bike straight from the door. The hiking is on way-marked tracks, both on local ones and on the long distance national (GR) ones. The biking is varied; you can either mountain-bike on the tracks or road-bike on the routes followed by the biggest cycle race in France, the Ardechoise, or do a combination of both if you hire our hybrid mountain/road bikes.

Next, you can explore the rivers. Canoeing down the gorges of the Ardeche or the Chassezac is pretty well obligatory! And once you've done that, the swimming is wonderful - and the fishing is not bad either........... Then you can rock-climb out of the gorges or fly over them on the Via Ferrata (zip wire) at Thuyets.

And for something a little less terrifying, you can try horse-riding or even donkey-trekking.

There are many caves to see in the region including Aven D'Orgnac where there are often son et lumiere events.

Day-trips to Orange, Avignon, Nimes are within easy reach as are vists to the Cotes du Rhone villages where you can sample the famous wines.

"The perfect place to unwind with everything you need to recharge your mind body and soul."

I came across this wonderful place whilst searching on the Internet for a place to stay in the south of France. It is off the beaten track but provides everything you need to unwind and recharge the batteries. The 15 metre pool allows for a proper swim at any time of the day. The gym and jacuzi were very popular with all the family and hiring the bikes to cycle to the markets was excellent. The owners live on sight and could not be more helpful. They have thought very carefully about what their guests might require and the cottages and property as a whole are very well equipped. Each time we have stayed there they have been instrumental in making our holiday extra special. Although this is self catering accommodation I would recommend the option to have a meal provided on your arrival - delicious and excellent value. Fresh eggs and vegetables are available, hatched and grown on sight and supermarkets are a relatively short drive away. L'Elze, a great discovery and place we intend to return to again and again.
