The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region
The Limousin region, ‘the land of a thousand lakes’ is stunningly beautiful, typified by rolling pastures, woodland of chestnut and oak and dotted with charming ‘meteorite’ stone houses and farms. The land is grazed by sheep and the beautiful glossy chestnut-coloured limousine cattle, renowned for their outstanding beef. It’s like walking back in time, understated, empty roads and full of memories of what life used to be like in a less frantic world. Whether you want to play golf, pony trek, walk, cycle, ride the white water rapids, swim in the still lakes, immerse yourself in the Limousin’s diverse culture, discover it’s wildlife or totally relax, then the Limousin is for you.
Rochechouart area
Rochechouart is a beautiful walled town, roughly 45km west of Limoges with a claim to fame of being the site of the largest meteorite ever to hit the earth some two hundred million years ago. There is a small museum in the town which attempts to uncover the history of the meteorite. The building using the stone of the meteorite is the imposing Chateau which stands on the towns edge. There are other Chateau at La Rochefaucauld and Chalus and if you follow the Richard the Lionhart route, many more can be viewed. Hot and cold Roman baths are found on the Chabanais road at Chassenon and are ample testimony to the magnificence of Roman bath houses. There is the Velo-Rail (bicycle-rail) experience at Manot and two main routes are to be found : Roumazieres to Manot (7.5km) and Confolens to Manot (32km) A perfect way to exercise and view the countryside. Limoges is famous for it’s porcelain and the nearest factory and outlet is in Aixe sur Vienne. A fascinating experience. For both restaurants and markets, the area is known for its quality and will suit many varying tastes. Details can be obtained from our Help Guide left in the house.
