The Limousin/Auvergne region

The varied landscape of Haute-Vienne consisting of forests, countryside and lakes, offers a range of activities including walking, fishing, cycling and boating. In addition, the region has a strong historical and cultural heritage and the landscape is dotted with Roman churches, abbeys and fortified castles. Beautiful man-made beaches are easily accessible and are an excellent alternative for a great day out. In particular, the Lake of Vassiviere, created in 1950, is extremely popular with visitors.

The region has a semi-continential climate with summer temperatures in the mid 20's, perfect for enjoying the scenery.

What to see in Haute-Vienne?

Limoges is famed for its production of enamel and fine china and its oak barrels, which are used for the ageing of cognac.

Bellac is known for its theatrical heritage and ample fishing opportunities on the nearby Lake St-Pardoux. Festival Bellac is particularly popular during the summer months of June and July.

Oradour sur Glane was home to the horrifying masacre of 642 people on 10 June 1944, the town being wiped out by the German forces. The original village remains unchanged since that date and serves as a memorial and reminder of the tragic loss of lives. There is also a museum, which houses personal items recovered on that devastating day.

Rochechouart is on the Limousin border with the Dordogne, about 40 km from Limoges. As well as the château and the Romanesque and Gothic church with a museum of prehistory, there is also the Rochechouart "Espace Météorite" (Meteorite Center), which is worth a visit.

Brantôme an ancient, mystical and sacred town has fascinated visitors for centuries. Nestled in a cluster of limestone caves high on the Aquitaine plateau, Brantôme's natural beauty, bubbling spring, and well-stocked river attracted its earliest inhabitants over forty thousand years ago.

Rochechouart

Chez Forest is a tiny hamlet of a dozen properties deep in the countryside, surrounded by woodland and farmland. The distance from any major conurbations serves to make it extremely peaceful and relaxing, with quiet rural roads and a network of marked footpaths and cycleways on the door step.

There are many villages and small towns within a short drive, where traditional French fayre is available, from delightful bars and restaurants to markets and street traders.

Leisure lakes for boating, swimming and fishing are also close at hand.

For a longer day out, the Atlantic Coast is a 2 hour drive and Cognac within an hour.
