The Western Cape region

The Western Cape of South Africa is a beautiful region, a nature lover's paradise where the pace of life is slow and relaxing and the weather usually very conducive to outdoor pursuits. Scenery around Montagu is fantastic, nestling as it does in a kloof in the Langeberg - rocky mountain and valley. The Breede river runs through nearby Bonnievale and can be navigated by picturesque barge during the non-winter seasons. Hot springs are found in the Montagu itself and in the wider region, where one can swim or relax. Rock climbing - amongst the best in South Africa - is a very popular activity in Montagu as is hiking and cycling and there are several other nature reserves in the area (within an hour's drive) where one can also hike, cycle and watch birds and small game animals. There is a flourishing wine industry here and visitors are welcome at the many vineyards in Robertson Valley to taste the wines before buying. Many wine estates also have restaurants and other activities to offer visitors such as the hiking and mountain biking trails at Van Loveren, just 15 minutes drive from Montagu. Summers are hot, dry and sunny, winters are warm by day, cold at night. Spring and Autumn are usually beautiful. Rain falls mainly in winter

Within the town of Montagu there is an abundance of picturesque houses and other buildings, 24 of which are listed as National monuments. Follow the Montagu Meander to discover them as well as the many Art galleries, restaurants and shops displaying local arts and crafts. Not just listed buildings, but many private residences repay a closer look, the town's folk take a great pride ntheir beautiful old houses and gardens. The museum houses a fascinating collection of artefacts from the lives of local people in years gone by and the nature garden is a peaceful place to enjoy the local flora and a gentle stroll up and around the Bessiekop hill. Dried fruit acquires special importance in Montagu, home to the famous industry which sees dried fruits and nuts from the region widely exported. Here you can also sample the local speciality, a delicious dessert Muscadel wine and the local brandy. Montagu town also boasts one of the finest Art Deco buildings in the Western Cape, the Montagu Country Hotel where the ambience of a more elegant age still reigns supreme amidst the evocative Art Deco furnishings and art. A resident pianist completes the atmosphere most evenings. For the energetic, there is superb rock climbing in the Badkloof of Montagu nature reserve (reached via Montagu West, not the nature garden which is in Montagu South) as well as hiking trails of greater or lesser degrees of strenuousness. Naturally there is also a splendid selection of excellent restaurants and eateries and a weekly Saturday market selling local produce and delicious home made goodies if you decide to eat in .
