About this location
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Le Caussigne is situated in a very tranquil location, ideal for a retreat after a day visiting the surrounding Cathar castles, water activities of white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing based in Quillan or Montbel, abseiling or rock climbing. If you are lucky you will see golden eagles and Egyptian vultures.
The local towns of Mirepoix and Limoux with their wonderful markets and architecture which define their departments are not to be missed. Together with the caves of Niaux (cave paintings) and Mas d'Azil, which has been inhabited for thousands of years, Andorra only 90 mins away, the coast easily accessible, there is lots to do and see.
Although it is only 90 mins to Perpignan the beaches close by are a further 30 mins on after one has negotiated the traffic. It is equally close to visit the Costa Brava as well as Argeles, Coulioure and Narbonne. There are sandy beaches north of Perpignan and just south, then you have the rocky coastline but sandy beaches southwards. Also the Lac de Montbel is only 10 mins away with a beach, sailing, pedalos.
There are 2 golf courses within under 1 hour - one at Carcassonne and another at Bastide de Serou (in the most spectacular setting).
There are several ski resorts in the vicinity. Mont d'Olmes, Ax les Thermes (Ax Bonascre) are two very good resorts, especially Ax which has excellent skiing whatever standard you are. There are several small resorts which are open according to snowfalls.
Carcassonne (1 hour).
Perpignan (90 mins).
Toulouse (90 mins).
Chalabre: 8 kilometres. Mirepoix and Limoux are approx 25 mins away. Carcassonne is 1 hour. All Cathar castles are within 1 hour except perhaps Queribus and Peyreperteuse.
There is a tennis court in the local village which is free to use. Caretakers live on the property so can help in any way they can.
The Monday market in Mirepoix, well known for its medieval architecture, is to be experienced as are those of Limoux and Foix. In the summer the lake in Puivert (10 mins by car) is an ideal spot to take children as is the Lac du Montbel (10 mins) which is the largest lake in the Ariege. There are lots of walks as well being able to walk as far as you want from the house. There is also the underground river of Labouiche in the Ariege - you take a boat underground! Several small french restaurants locally providing traditional food.
