The Midi-Pyrenees / Gers region
The surrounding area offers a host of cultural, gastronomic and leisure activities which will leave you never having to look for something to do. Food and wine are King around here. You’ll find much of the cuisine is based around the duck, with of course foie gras holding centre stage. Whether you’re for it or against it, it’s a way of life for the folks round here and if you’re a fan, you won’t taste better the world over – guaranteed! The local vineyards, both well known and not so well known are welcoming and unpretentious. During July and August there are loads of night-markets and Christmas markets are becoming more and more popular – why not think about doing your Christmas shopping in a whole new style?
In terms of sport and activities, in the village itself, you can canoe and kayak; play tennis, basketball; enjoy riverside biking and walking and there's also a village outdoor pool if you fancy a swim in the company of others. Within 30 minutes drive you'll find great swimming lakes and a huge choice of outdoor swimming pools; fantastic walks, bike routes and off-road biking; horse-riding; golf; fishing; water-ski-ing; quad-biking; parachuting and hang-gliding; motor racing... the list goes on...why not check out our website for more ideas...
Riscle area
The Village, Riscle, with its population of only 1200, boasts 6 café-bars/restaurants. All only a few minutes walk from the house!
The main village boulangerie is run by husband and wife team Jean-Luc and Joelle who pride themselves not only on the range and quality of their bread, but on the patisserie they lovingly prepare every day of the week (except Monday when they take a well earned rest – then you walk to one of the other two local boulangeries).
There’s Francis, the butcher whose wife Régine does scrumptious “traiteur” dishes (home-made ready meals) if you fancy eating in (without the need to cook). There’s also a small supermarket run by the Barr’s, a local family who pride themselves on their butcher counter, cheese selection and fresh fish on a Friday. And then of course there’s the oyster-man who comes from the coast (sorry, did we mention we’re foodies?). Thereafter, you’ve got a stunningly stylish flower-shop, a small clothes shop, a newsagent, a tabac, cashpoints and for those unforeseen problems, pharmacies, doctors and dentists…basically all you could want for that well-earned rest in rural France.
The village market is on a Friday morning and spills from the market hall right down into the main town square with its pretty fountain and imposing XI century church. Why not stop and sip a coffee in one of the café bars while you watch the world go by?
If you fancy a swim in the company of others, you could take the 5 minute leisurely stroll to the newly refurbished village pool which is open in July and August. Or there are two lovely swimming lakes within a 15 minute drive. In addition, the River Adour which runs through the village has many small, secluded river beaches which are great for picnics and total tranquillity. In the park you’ll find peaceful and unspoilt river walks and picnic spots, tennis, basketball and fishing. You could always hire some bikes if you fancy.
Also in the village is the Church of St Peter of Riscle. This classified historic monument of France dates way back, with questionable traces of IXc roots, but is certainly traceable back to the XI century. A typical gascon, gothic church, it holds court over the whole village and is visible from virtually every corner. It holds an interesting and troubled history with the English - so beware!
At the local college, you’ll find La Galerie Bleue, a gallery focusing largely on modern art which is open to the public both during and outside term time. Here you’ll regularly find exhibitions by well-known international as well as French artists.
The village festival is held in early August and is a spectacular celebration for the whole family.
How to get there
With a wide choice of flights, you’re sure to find something to suit your dates, location and budget.
Pau international airport (with flights from Stansted and Bristol) is only 40 minutes away; Bordeaux and Toulouse (with any number of UK flight options) are a 2 hour drive and if you fancy coming in to Biarritz (with flights from Stansted, Dublin and Shannon) that’s an hour and a half’s drive.
Alternatively, you could take the ferry option and see a bit of France as you travel. If you opt for the ferry, we can recommend great overnight stops on the way. If you need car hire, or need to be picked up at an airport, just let us know and we can make the necessary arrangements.

Guestbook
“You are so lucky!” – is the comment we hear most often from people who stay. “What an absolutely fantastic house and being able to eat out and not need to think about driving is just great!” “We can’t believe how cheap good food and wine is here – we’ve been to a different restaurant every day!” “We really enjoyed just chilling out in the garden and cooking up different things on the barbecue – it’s been a real break!” “The lady at the boulangerie said today that she’s really sad that we’re going home tomorrow! We can honestly say that we’ve never met so many nice local people on a holiday before.” “We spent virtually the whole day today at the river beach you told us about. We didn’t see a soul and devoured the most delicious picnic – we won’t forget today in a long, long time!” “We can’t believe that you’re so central, we’ve only been here a week and we’ve been to Spain and the Atlantic coast – it’s been like three holidays in one!”
