Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
Rieux is within the Minervois area, the largest wine growing area in France where you are never more than 5 minutes from a Domain or Chateau and are welcomed in to taste the local produce. 45 minutes from the Mediterranean Sea and an hour from the Spanish boarder it enjoys one of the highest levels of Sunshine with average summer temperatures in excess of 35 degrees.
The area is set in the historic Cathar region with many sites of interest including Le Cite in Carcassonne with its fairytale turrets, Hautpoul & Minerve.
The Languedoc is also famous for the Canal du Midi which flows down to the town of Sete where it meets the Mediterranean sea. The Tour de France often comes through many of the villages as the area is known for its cycle and walking routes. Other places of interest include Narbonne, Bezier, Mirepoix, Perpignan, Foix and not forgetting Limoux where the Masked Carnival takes place every weekend from January to March.
The Rieux Minervois area
Rieux is an old Cathar village which is typical of the area with narrow streets where stone buildings front each other and street names that reflect its history. The XII century church is well worth a visit with the alter central to the church and pews surrounding it in an 180 degree circle.
The Chateau Rieux is just one of the Wine producers for the village which also has a local co-operative just 5 minutes walk from the house where you can top your wine supplies up from the tap. Typical of the Region, Rieux hosts many fetes throughout the year and welcomes visitors to join them.
The Canal du Midi is about 5 minutes drive from the village and day boat trips can be accessed in Homps about 10 minutes drive from the house, The village hosts a market three times a week, including Saturday where you can buy fresh produce including specialist goats cheese, Mussels, Oysters, eggs and vegetables. Lakes with watersport activities are located at Carcassonne and Homps, with the sunkissed beaches of the Mediterranean less than an hour away.

My wife and I recently stayed at the villa for four weeks with our adult children joining us for some of the time. It is one of the most enjoyable villa holidays we have had. The outer space is private, spacious and the heated swimming pool is an absolute winner (seemed like the size of pool you would be sharing with others in an hotel.....). Great fun in the garage with the pool table (bar type table with the money slot removed...!). The sitting room is spacious and the kitchen better equipped than most holiday villas we have stayed in. Mosquito nets on all the bedroom windows made for uninterrupted sleep. Easy walk up hill through plane trees skirting vines to the village for morning croissants or lunch/dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the villa and would certainly like to rent it again if we are back in the area. Response: Thank you for your very positive comments. You were a joy to have as clients. |
