The Midi-Pyrenees / Aveyron region

Until recently Aveyron was little known, its reputation based on a few household names such as Roquefort, Millau viaduct and Laguiole knives. However this doesn't even scratch the surface of this wonderful region and what it has to offer. Before rushing through towards the beaches of the Mediterranean, stop to relax by the sides of the Aveyron's breathtaking lakes and tumbling rivers. Amongst its myriad of historic villages with their narrow streets and product markets, you'll find the true spirit of the region, the Aveyron boasts 10 of the " plus beaux village de France". You'll be able to find just about everything to do here from tasting the delights of the Aveyronnaise cuisine, to fishing, canoeing, kayaking through dramatic gorges and rapids. Tempt yourself with the walking trails across the Causses or explore the caverns and caves beneath the surface.

Situated in the Segala region with its 100 valleys, there is an abundance of stunning walks which take you from the high points with spectacular views of the far reaching surrounding areas down to the valleys with their babbling streams and rivers. There are routes that follow in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims, take you through Knights Templar settlements or simply allow you to lose yourself in the splendour of the landscape. The walks are graded from easy to difficult so you can plan which level you'd like to take in advance depending on how energetic you feel or what the capabilities are of your group. There are organised walking groups too if you like to talk to the locals, improve your French and take on board a little of the local history. Of course all the marked tracks are accessible by mountain bike and some by horse.

Rieupeyroux area

The local gastronomy is renowned for its range of excellent products, notably its 9 A.O.C. labels, including Roquefort, Bleu des Causses, the wines of Marcillac. Within a few minutes walk is a good selection of five restaurants ranging from La Baraque opposite La Salinero, to the Pizzeria with a further selection in the village.

Between June and September there are fetes and festivals, including a three day one in Rieupeyroux with food, music and attractions, to the potato festival celebrating local delicacies such as the Segala veal and the Aligot potato dish. As well as local product markets in Rieupeyroux every Sunday morning and every third Wednesday, there are the larger more spectacular ones in Villefranche de Rouergue, Naucelle, Najac and Figeac. It is just as pleasurable to watch others shop while you sit in the sun and and enjoy a coffee within the walls of a 13th century bastide town.

Rieupeyroux as small as it is with 2,159 inhabitants, boasts an array of leisure activities which include indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, tennis centre comprising 1 indoor court and 2 all weather surface courts. There is a cultural centre; offering exhibitions in art and ceramics, cinema and music festivals with the "Rencontres a la Campagne" every September.

The lakeside area offers a challenging assault course which takes you on a part tour of the medieval town. Of course, you could decide to watch the local competitive petanque or even Quilles, a game not dissimilar to bowling and skittles but played outside on a court the size of a football pitch. The Pradinas Animal Park is a 10 minute drive away with a small train, local wildlife, stunning scenery, perfect for our younger guests.

The local "topoguide" suggests 27 cycling, hiking and horseback riding circuits each describing curiosities along the way.

Go sailing, canoeing, jet skiing or parascending on the lakes of Pareloup, Pont de Salars and Villefranche de Panat, a 40 minute car ride away. Lake Pareloup offers a boat tour of the lake, and all of the lakes have well-maintained beaches for sunbathing and swimming. Micropolis, the insect museum is also nearby.

Why not try...automobile sports such as go-carting and quad bikes, classic sports such as tennis, squash…?

Unexpected activities
...Allow yourself to be tempted by the unusual :

Géocache: a GPS-guided treasure-hunt.
Satellite hikes and other wilderness activities which use the technology of video games. Take off into the countryside in search of a treasure with the help of a supplied GPS unit. A high-tech treasure hunt for the 21st century!

If winter sports are more your cup of tea...

Laguiole (1000-1400 m)
The well equipped resort offers both cross-country and downhill skiing, with 16 trails (one floodlit), ski lifts and snow cannons plus 45 km of cross-country trails inviting you to explore the vast open spaces of Aubrac in total serenity. 89km from Rieupeyroux.
