Home description
A beautiful white house placed in the middle of a green slope, in the middle of an olive grove surrounded by oak trees, overlooking Farfa Abbey, in the heart of Sabina. Huge hall with fireplace and large bow window, 2 bedrooms and bathrooms on ground floor, another two with one bathroom upstairs.
A garden made for sunbathing, just green grass and bush flowers. From here you can explore the Sabina region, the fatherland of the Romans' first allies, the Sabini, and full of Medieval memories and landmarks like Farfa Abbey, home to the most ancient library in Europe, founded just after the fall of the Roman Empire, where Charles the Great stayed before being crowned in Rome, AD 800.

The Lazio region
Sabina, the first land the Romans conquered, and where they grew their olive trees, much like today. The land of sunny fields and sleepy villages undiscovered by tourists who tend to flock into Tuscany and Umbria, or in the more fashionable Viterbo area. Land of medieval towns with stone castles and churches built around AD 1000, gentle hills and harsh mountains, unspoilt landscapes of lakes hidden in woods.
And just one hour drive away, Rome. Or its coast, the glamorous beaches of Sabaudia and Circeo, in the South, or the trendy hangout of Capalbio up North. Enjoy a day trip to Umbria and Tuscany, for the finest landscapes and arts, or to the Abruzzo national park, to see mountains and bears and wolves. Best visited from May to October. Rieti / Fara in Sabina area
Farfa, built according to the legend in the 6th century, is one of the most ancient abbeys in Europe and it has the oldest library in the continent. Destroyed by the Longobards it was rebuilt by St. Tommaso of Moriana, around 680 AD, after he had a vision during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him and instructed him to find and reconstruct the ruined basilica.
Scattered around the area are many little and almost unknown lovely towns such as Fara Sabina, Castelnuovo, Frasso, Montenero. There are Roman remains and medieval churches all over the area. The nearest town to the house is Casaprota. Its name comes from "Casa Perotae", presumably a small town belonging to the Duke of Spoleto Hildebrand, and it is first recorded in AD 776.
Around Casaprota and in Sabina you can follow a "Romanesque itinerary" to visit some of the best preserved traces of Upper Middle Age architecture, or the "Horace Itinerary" to see all places that formed a backdrop to the works of the poet Quinto Orazio Flacco, known as Horace, during his stay in Sabina from AD 33.
How to get there
1 hour drive from Rome (70 km on Highway Rome-Florence and via Salaria). Half hour from Abruzzo National Park, lakes, forests. 10 mins from the medieval Farfa Abbey. 90 mins. from Viterbo. 3 hrs. from Florence.
