The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting.
Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens.
The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Richmond / Gunnerside area
As is one of the prettiest villages in the Dales National Park, Gunnerside is situated in the heart of Swaledale. Surrounded by traditional farm meadows, pastures and fells, this charming village lies in what might be considered a sleepy backwater, with the pretty Gunnerside Beck running through the village centre. On the outskirts of the settlement, this lovely stream joins the glorious River Swale along which visitors can enjoy fascinating walks. The cluster of pretty stone houses in the town conceals a café, which has 'bistro' nights, as well as a village pub which serves good food at lunchtime and in the evening. Richmond, Leyburn, Hawes and Barnard Castle are all less than 15 miles away and offer a further range of amenities and activities. With so much in the surrounding area, this is a great location for anyone looking to explore somewhere a little off the beaten track.

Nice location. Handy for walks. Bit tight on the parking for 2 cars. By the end of the week we had the measure of the individual heating system. Couldn't find a visitors book to sign or make... more |
Guestbook for 1764 - Underhill
The location of the cottage gave us an opportunity to begin our walks from the front door. We loved that remote feel to the location in what is a beautiful area and the nearest pubs were only a mile away. There was sufficient space in the cottage for 4 adults and a small dog to be comfortable but not cramped. We felt the furnishings and level of comfort was very good. We appreciated the owners help and advice.

,Great location - just where we wanted it. The property was in a quiet location amongst a small hamlet comprising a few houses. Nice pub one mile away. Lovely lounge and kitchen. Bedrooms to good standard as well.
Friendly locals - especially farmer.
Log stoves.
