The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting.
Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens.
The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Richmond / Reeth area
Situated at the southernmost point of Arkengarthdale, the pretty little Swaledale hamlet of Fremington is set in a delightful area with magnificent countryside and spectacular views. Just a short walk away, the villages of Grinton and Reeth, offer good pubs and excellent places to eat. Reeth itself dates back to Saxon times and became a centre for hand knitting and local lead mining. Now, with its 18th Century houses and hotel clustered around a large village green, the settlement is primarily a tourist destination with a wide array of shops, pubs and restaurants. Nearby Askrigg is also worth visiting and is probably better known from its role as 'Darrowby’ in the television series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. This charming little location also boasts the stunning Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force, which is England's highest single-drop waterfall at 99 feet tall. Richmond and Leyburn are also within easy driving distance and offer a further range of amenities.

Lovely cottage but the location was outstanding. We walked from the front door every day and an easy walk into Reeth for pubs and shops.
