Northern England region
Renowned for its great natural beauty, the diversity of its wildlife habitats, its rich cultural heritage and its fantastic opportunities for outdoor recreation, the Yorkshire Dales was designated a National Park in 1954.
The landscape includes some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from the crags and pavements of Malhamdale to the stunning show cavesof Stump Cross. Stone-built villages nestle in the valley bottoms amongst traditional farming landscapes of field barns, drystone walls and flower-rich hay meadows while expansive heather moorland clads the fells rising between the dales, each one having its own distinct character. Spectacular waterfalls and ancient broadleaved woodland contrast with the scattered and atmospheric remains of former mine workings which recall the area's rich industrial heritage.
If you can tear yourself away from glorious Swaledale, day-trips by car give the visitor access to any number of picturesque villages, bustling market towns and scenic beauty spots. Take your pick from Yorkshire's famous (or lesser known) visitor attractions. A selective check-list might include Fountains Abbey, the world of James Herriot, Newby Hall and Gardens, the 'Living Museum of the North' at Beamish and even, for a grand day out, the County's historic capital of York.
Gunnerside is the gateway to upper Swaledale, a picturesque ensemble of grey stone cottages with the beck gurgling through the village to join the glorious river Swale. The village boasts a popular licensed café which also hosts Bistro nights and quizzes and even provides tasty takeaway meals. There is also a working Smithy. There are numerous walks from the door – whether you are in the mood for a gentle riverside stroll or a challenging hike over the breezy fells. Or if you prefer to explore from the saddle - bike hire and pony-trekking are both on hand.
Please note that the Kings Head pub in Gunnerside is currently closed and for sale. The Farmers Arms at Muker a couple of miles or so up the dale is a lovely traditional family pub serving great food and 2 miles in the other direction there is the Punch Bowl at Low Row which has a well-reputed restaurant.
• Hazel Brow open farm 2 miles away in Low Row
• Swaledale Museum in Reeth (6 miles)
• Wensleydale Creamery, Dales Countryside Museum and Ropemaking in Hawes (11 miles)
• Aysgarth Falls beauty spot and riverside walks (10.5 miles)
• Bolton Castle, one of the country's best preserved medieval castles (12 miles)
• The great Norman fortress of Richmond Castle on its rocky crag above the Swale
• The amazingly quirky and not-to-be-missed Forbidden Corner, a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and follies in a four-acre garden near Leyburn (18 miles)
• Black Sheep Brewery in Masham (25 miles).

"Wonderful Gunnerside cottage"
We had such a lovely week at Christmas Cottage, Gunnerside. The cottage is charming and peaceful surrounded by picture postcard scenery. Wonderful for walks or daytrips to Ripon, Skipton and Durham. I was very sad to leave.

"cosy well presented cottage"
We loved our stay & would recommend to anyone. The only downside were the seriously hard beds in both bedrooms.New 'quality' mattresses required.… More
We are adding a mattress topper to the bed in the blue bedroom this week. We are however, puzzled that the reviewer found both mattresses too hard. The last person to sleep in the red bedroom said it was 'so comfy' and we have not had any other negative comments about it. We will monitor feedback very carefully of course. We are really delighted about all the positive comments as we just want all our guests to have a great holiday in this lovely part of Yorkshire.

"A lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful setting"
Had a long weekend stay at Christmas Cottage with husband and friends to celebrate my birthday at the end of October. Gunnerside is in a beautiful setting with fantastic views and stunning walks on the doorstep. The cottage is well equipped, spotlessly clean and so warm and cosy and welcoming. We had snow on our first morning, magical! We were expecting it to be quite chilly as the cottage is such an old building but we were very pleasantly suprised at how efficient the heating was and also the lashings of hot water constantly available! As with a lot of rural pubs the village pub was under threat of closure whilst we were there (it being end of season and not very busy) Hope it manages to survive as this is a great amenity to have in the village. We enjoyed an afternoon there drinking and chatting with new friends but didnt find the staff very welcoming. Probably because they were stressing at the imminent threat of closure. We ate at the Punch Bowl, Long Row, one evening as this had been recommended to us by friends. We were a little disappointed. This may have been as our table was adjacent to the kitchen and waiters were coming and going constantly! The food was fine though which is the main priority. The other evenings we ate in at the cottage and enjoyed the ambiance of the log burner etc! Had a great break. Wish we could have stayed longer hope to be back one day. Just want to add that Ruth the owner of the cottage has been spot on right from the outset and so helpful. Thankyou!

"Comfortable, cosy cottage."
Christmas Cottage is a well furnished comfortable, cosy cottage.
It's location in Gunnerside is an ideal base for both walking and exploring the Swaledale and Wenslydale areas.
The village pub is literally a stone's throw from the front door and the friendly service and home cooked food made it a pleasure to visit.
The local Tea Rooms also do a scrummy takeaway curry on a Monday night.
We really enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to visiting again.

"Cosy, picturesque, well equiped cottage in beautifull Swaledale"
The booking went smooth, with quick response to our questions.
The cottage was as we expected from the description, and we found all the necessary equipement at hand. The only thing we brought with us ( being dutch and as such coffee drinkers) was our own coffeemachine.
If you didn't bring your own guides or info for the area there is plenty info available in the cottage. We did many great walks just from the frontdoor.
We loved that with the ipod dock we could play all our own music!
We have noted the comment about the mattress. It is difficult to keep everyone happy as people prefer different types of mattress. We have had a couple of other comments about the mattress in the main bedroom being too hard however, and we do want ALL our guests to have a comfortable night, so we are planning to add a mattress topper next time we visit.
