The walled back garden is mainly laid to lawn with established fruit trees and Rose bushes. It is completely private and due to Cardinal Richelieu's town plan enjoys the sun from sunrise to sunset. The patio area has sun loungers and a large table and chairs seating 8. The built in paddling pool (converted from a garden pond!) is great for cooling off in or for children to play in.
The central courtyard is also a great area for children to safely play in as completely enclosed from the square outside by large original oak doors. It is also a cool, safe shady area to leave a dog. We also use this area for eating outside and there is a BBQ and table and chairs for 6. The Oak doors lead directly to the Market Square, with cafe life, restaurants and Boulangerie, Charcuterie, Supermarket, Bank and Post office all a few minutes walk. Parking is available in the Square outside the front doors.
The Garden House is available with the House, Garden and Courtyard for the sole use for your holiday. We have an English (french speaking) caretaker who lives close by who can arrange to get in shopping for your arrival and she can usually arrange local people for babysitting if required.
Although sleeping 10 the garden house is rented out for a maximum of 8.
The Centre region
The South Loire area offers a temperate climate between April and October. Richelieu is an unique example of 17thC French town planning and today this 'cite ideale' is a listed site. It is a quiet town not overrun by tourists at any time. The main 'Grande Rue' is lined with 28 private townhouses. One of these imposing townhouses has an interactive display and story of Cardinal Richelieu, his town and the lost Chateau. The 17th century Church, Town Hall (with museum) and Les Halles are all situated in the Place du Marche, along with our house.
Located at the crossroads of Touraine, Anjou and Poitou Charentes. Richelieu is a great location for visiting the many famous medieval towns of Chinon, Tours, Poitiers, Loches, Saumur,Fontevraud, Villandry and Azay la Rideau. All these are within an hours drive as are many other famous Chareaux of the Loire. Walking and Cycling are both popular activities in this area and the Richelieu tourist office two doors from our house can provide up to date infomation on the many varied day trip outings. The huge park with the remains of Cardinal Richelieu's Chateau is just 2 minutes walk and also great for walking or cycling.
Futuroscope is also an intereating place to visit and is suitable for all ages.1 or 2 day passes are available. Richelieu is just a 45 minute drive. The zoo at Douay and Monkey world also prove popular for families.
Close to Saumur are interesting troglydyte attractions, mushroom farms and at Gratien and Meyer demonstration and tastings of Champagne(method!) production. Chinon vineyards are based along the Vienne and well worth a visit for both the Chinon reds and local Rose wines
Richelieu is an ideal location for a quiet, relaxing holiday in a typical French market town. It is called the garden of France and the twice weekly market in les Halles reflects this with local farmers selling their produce. There are also fetes, concerts, wine fairs and broquante days held in the Place du Marche and in surrounding villages. Details can always be obtained from the Tourist office or Richelieu website.
The town itself is steeped in history and the newly opened Espace Richelieu in the Grand Rue and interactive visit at Chinon Castle are worth visiting soon after arrival to learn about the history of the area.
The Parc Richelieu is a huge, peaceful area to cycle and walk at any time of year. It is rarely busy and also great for children and dogs to play and run about in safety.
There are numerous local vineyards( our house book lists many of these that we have tried.) Restaurants in small villages with amazing value all inclusive menus. There are many Michelin starred ones too. There are several local cafes and restaurants in town with good value meals and Vins du Maison! It is great to be able to use these amenities in the Place du Marche, letting children, especially young teenagers, if they wish (as ours do), return to the safety of the house where we have satellite TV, a DVD library and free WIFI available for your own internet access.

"Perfect for young children"
We hired this house for our family holiday with our two children five and one. I was looking for a good value holiday so was planning on camping but the thought of taking the sterilizer and baby gear I decided to investigate the cost of hiring a house and stumbled across this house. I contacted the owner about suitability of taking my now walking baby, she was great and explained what was there and what to take (like my 5 year old's bike). The house is homely and well equipped, it has a wooden cot in one of the bedrooms and I borrowed their stairgates and highchair (the house does have a lot of hard floors and steps but no different to our wooden floors at home) and best of all it has Cbeebies on digital tv and a DVD player! Richelieu is a small quiet town and the house is in the main square. We walked to the bakery each morning across the square. Took the bike to the park two minute walk where there are paths to cycle along, big open spaces to play in and a small lovely playground. A bit further along is the public swimming pool about 2 euros per person, men need speedo's! friendly even when our French speaking is lacking. In the evening went for drinks in the square and often ate in the restaurant in town all very child friendly. The tourist office is a few houses down they were helpful in suggesting places to visit and if you buy your ticket through them you can get a discount to some of the attractions. Our favourite parts were using the park, walking around the market in Richelieu bought some large garlic and some antiques! Going to Chateau du Rivau a short drive away but for the children a magical garden to explore and the zoo best one I have been to. All the family had a holiday to remember and already looking to book for next year!.
I am so glad that you all enjoyed your stay and that my daughters' baby and child equipment was useful. My eldest grandchild (of 6) now 11 so this equipment,DVD's, games and books is growing rapidly!

"“Lovely House Beautiful Location”"
We stayed in this house in July 2013, in a group of four adults, two teenagers and a dog. House was lovely and spacious, well equipped kitchen, good sized bedrooms with comfortable beds. The garden was perfect for the dog, fully enclosed and safe although did get very hot in the afternoon (as we were lucky enough to have fabulous weather). The courtyard at the front was ideal to cool down and was a perfect place to leave the dog if we went out without him, with its cool shaded area. The paddling pool was very handy in the hot weather, and the town is perfectly situated for access to Chinon and Saumur. Theres a very handy little Carrefour just round the corner and lovely places to eat and drink in the town. The nearby park is lovely for walking and cycling and there is an outdoor pool minutes away. We have stayed in a few houses in the Loire Valley over the years and would thoroughly recommend this property.
I am so glad that you all enjoyed the house and Richelieu as much as we do. Thank you for taking the time to give us a review.

"Large house in good location"
On the market square of Richileu so in the centre of things in this quiet and friendly town. A boulangerie and supermarket within yards. A large house with a number of floors reached by an ancient staircase. We travelled with young adult daughters who found space enough to get along. Crossing a courtyard to reach 'your' part of the house and therefore very quiet. A small garden which is not overlooked. No problem with parking even during the vintage car fete our first weekend. In a good position to reach Loire chateaux. Ate the best meal we've had in France for years and so of the holiday at Fosse St Ange, just off the square and worth the trip just for that!

"Brilliant family holiday with young children and friends"
We spent 2 weeks over the May half term with our 2 young children and friends with their children (thanks for letting us all go for just a small extra charge!!). We had an excellent time, the house is great and the enclosed courtyard and garden meant we didn't need to worry about the children - even in May the back garden is a real sun trap and we had b-b-q's every night. The children loved the park with the playground, deer to feed and plenty of space to ride their bikes. We want to go back in the summer and try out the local pool just next to the park. As well as cycling around the park we went off for lots of day trips cycling in Chinon, along the Loire and the Vienne. Thanks for the info in the book - the children (and the adults) really enjoyed the day out canoeing at Chinon- it was great to be dropped off upstream and just gently paddle back. The zoo (approx 45mins away) was also a massive hit. I would highly recommend this house to families/ friends, there's loads of outdoor activities in the region and plenty of vineyards to visit when the weather isn't so good! The balance of access to all the amenities in the town in a spacious and quiet house suited us perfectly. We have already booked again for next summer.
I hope you all enjoy the house again this summer -it's looking good! Many areas of the house and courtyard have been renovated and redecorated in the past three months ready for our Spring reopening!

We had a really enjoyable stay at this townhouse right in the centre of Richelieu. The house was very comfortable, with a lovely secluded garden close to all amenities. We had our two dogs with us and they particularly loved the walks in the beautiful local park (as did we) which was just a few minutes walk from the house. It was also great to walk out to the markets and local shops during the daytime and to the lovely restaurants in the evenings. We also travelled to the many lovely towns which are all within easy reach. When we felt tired after our travels, it was also lovely to have a meal either in the kitchen/dining room or within the very quite back garden. We fell in love with Richelieu during our stay and definitely hope to return.

"historic but very comfortable house in superb location"
Have visited this 17th century yet very well equipped and comfortable house twice with extended family including teenagers and an aunt and grandmother in their eighties. The property felt like a home and all loved it and coped easily with the spiral staircase. The location in the main square in Richelieu is ideal. Restaurants bars and shops are a stone's throw away yet the thick walls mean that the secluded garden at the back of the property is totally tranquil and a perfect place to retreat with a good book , to sunbathe or simply for an afternoon snooze. The town is of great historic interest and also within easy reach of a number of chateaux - don' t miss the gardens at Villandry. The towns of Chinon and Saumur have some great shops and Tours is a fascinating city. Don't miss the Friday market in Richelieu - amazing fish, vegetables, cheeses and other local produce. Would definitely return.
Thank you very much for your review. We are very pleased that you all enjoyed your holiday especially as originally you were concerned about it being suitable for your elderly mother and her sister. As I replied to you my own parents in their 80's love going to the house and really enjoy sitting in the square with a coffee reading their 'ordered' English newspapers! We also often have three generations at the house and all love it! I'm so glad yours had the same experience.
