Further details outdoors:
The walled back garden is mainly laid to lawn with established fruit trees and Rose bushes. It is completely private and due to Cardinal Richelieu's town plan enjoys the sun from sunrise to sunset. The patio area has sun loungers and a large table and chairs seating 8. The built in paddling pool (converted from a garden pond!) is great for cooling off in or for children to play in.
The central courtyard is also a great area for children to safely play in as completely enclosed from the square outside by large original oak doors. We also use this area for eating outside and there is a BBQ and table and chairs for 6. The Oak doors lead directly to the Market Square, with cafe life, restaurants and Boulangerie, Charcuterie, Supermarket, Bank and Post office all a few minutes walk. Parking is available in the Square outside the front doors. Local Farmers Markets are held in Les Halles on Mondays and Fridays.

The Loire Valley / Indre-et-Loire region

The South Loire area offers a temperate climate between April and October. Richelieu ia a quiet town not overrun by tourists at any time. It is on the border of Poitou Charentes and Indre loire. It is a great location for visiting the many famous medieval towns of Chinon, Tours, Poitiers and Saumur,Fontevraud, Villandry and Azay la Rideau are all within an hours drive.
Futuroscope is also a great place to visit if you are able to choose a time out of French School holidays. UK half terms and Easter breaks are often different from the French.
The zoo at Douay and Monkey world also prove popular with children. Close to Saumur are interesting troglydyte attractions, mushroom farms and at Gratien and Meyer demonstration and tastings of Champagne(method!) production. Chinon vinyards are based along the Vienne and well worth a visit for both the Chinon reds and local Rose wines
The Richelieu area
Richelieu is an ideal location for a quiet, relaxing holiday in a typical French market town. It is called the garden of France and the twice weekly market in les Halles reflects this with local farmers selling their produce. There are also fetes, concerts, wine fairs and broquante days held in the Place du Marche and in surrounding villages. Details can always be obtained from the Tourist office next to les Halles.
There are numerous local vinyards( our house book lists many of these that we have tried.) Restaurants in small villages with amazing value all inclusive menus. There are many Michelin starred ones too. There are several local cafes and restaurants in town with good value meals and Vins du Maison! It is great to be able to use these amenities in the Place du Marche, letting children, especially young teenagers, if they wish (as ours do), return to the safety of the house where we have satellite TV, a DVD library and free WIFI available for your own internet access.

Have visited this 17th century yet very well equipped and comfortable house twice with extended family including teenagers and an aunt and grandmother in their eighties. The property felt like a home and all loved it and coped easily with the spiral staircase. The location in the main square in Richelieu is ideal. Restaurants bars and shops are a stone's throw away yet the thick walls mean that the secluded garden at the back of the property is totally tranquil and a perfect place to retreat with a good book , to sunbathe or simply for an afternoon snooze. The town is of great historic interest and also within easy reach of a number of chateaux - don' t miss the gardens at Villandry. The towns of Chinon and Saumur have some great shops and Tours is a fascinating city. Don't miss the Friday market in Richelieu - amazing fish, vegetables, cheeses and other local produce. Would definitely return. |
Guestbook for Garden House Place du Marche

Loved the house.
Good living accommodation and garden. Everything we needed - home from home.
Richelieu is beautiful. Enjoyed being on the square although town unexpectedly very quiet. Handy Shopi and boulangeries. Loved early morning bike rides round the park. Used local swimming pool - not too busy and very practical round the corner.

Your house is in the perfect location to be able to walk out for dinner in the evenings, and to drive to chateaux on the Loire. We really enjoyed the benefit of both these hugely. We ate in local restaurants in the evenings, enjoyed the fete in the square and the market was fun. My husband relied on the internet access to communicate with work and the children (5 & 2 yrs) loved the paddling pool and the bonus of having Sky tv.

We loved the wonderful medieval town of Richelieu & the way the house opened directly onto the square made us feel at the centre of everything. The history of the town & the proximity of all essentials as well as the fabulous adjoining park really fired our imaginations.
'Terrific Golf week.. we played every day, only rained once. Our favourite course was Golf du Touraine at Tours.Loved the local restaurants (especially Le cardinal)' Camberley Golf group July 2010
We absolutely loved our week in Richelieu. Your house was just perfect for our young family - Louis (2) just loved the toys and paddling pool and his cot and Henry (7 months) was also v happy too. As were we... we loved our evenings outside, getting croissants each morning and enjoying the wonderful park. Great to have have your recommended babysitter (we ended up using Phoebe's friend, Suzanne, for two nights!)
We will definitely be back in touch in the future for a future booking.
Thank you too for such helpful emails ahead of our stay and of course all of the useful information you hold at the house. We had a great week!
Many thanks
