Further details outdoors:
The walled back garden is mainly laid to lawn with established fruit trees and Rose bushes. It is completely private and due to Cardinal Richelieu's town plan enjoys the sun from sunrise to sunset. The patio area has sun loungers and a large table and chairs seating 8. The built in paddling pool (converted from a garden pond!) is great for cooling off in or for children to play in.
The central courtyard is also a great area for children to safely play in as completely enclosed from the square outside by large original oak doors. It is also a cool, safe shady area to leave a dog. We also use this area for eating outside and there is a BBQ and table and chairs for 6. The Oak doors lead directly to the Market Square, with cafe life, restaurants and Boulangerie, Charcuterie, Supermarket, Bank and Post office all a few minutes walk. Parking is available in the Square outside the front doors. Local Farmers Markets are held in Les Halles on Mondays and Fridays.

The South Loire area offers a temperate climate between April and October. Richelieu ia a quiet town not overrun by tourists at any time. It is on the border of Poitou Charentes and Indre loire. It is a great location for visiting the many famous medieval towns of Chinon, Tours, Poitiers and Saumur,Fontevraud, Villandry and Azay la Rideau are all within an hours drive. Walking and Cycling are both popular activities in this area and the Richelieu tourist office two doors from our house can provide up to date infomation on the many varied day trip outings.
Futuroscope is also a great place to visit and is suitable for all ages.1 or 2 day passes are available and Richelieu is just a 45 minute drive. The zoo at Douay and Monkey world also prove popular for families.
Close to Saumur are interesting troglydyte attractions, mushroom farms and at Gratien and Meyer demonstration and tastings of Champagne(method!) production. Chinon vinyards are based along the Vienne and well worth a visit for both the Chinon reds and local Rose wines
The Richelieu area
Richelieu is an ideal location for a quiet, relaxing holiday in a typical French market town. It is called the garden of France and the twice weekly market in les Halles reflects this with local farmers selling their produce. There are also fetes, concerts, wine fairs and broquante days held in the Place du Marche and in surrounding villages. Details can always be obtained from the Tourist office or Richelieu website.
The town itself is steeped in history and the newly opened Espace Richelieu in the Grand Rue and interactive visit at Chinon Castle are worth visiting soon after arrival to learn about the history of the area.
The Parc Richelieu is a huge, peaceful area to cycle and walk at any time of year. It is rarely busy and also great for children and dogs to play and run about in safety.
There are numerous local vineyards( our house book lists many of these that we have tried.) Restaurants in small villages with amazing value all inclusive menus. There are many Michelin starred ones too. There are several local cafes and restaurants in town with good value meals and Vins du Maison! It is great to be able to use these amenities in the Place du Marche, letting children, especially young teenagers, if they wish (as ours do), return to the safety of the house where we have satellite TV, a DVD library and free WIFI available for your own internet access.

On the market square of Richileu so in the centre of things in this quiet and friendly town. A boulangerie and supermarket within yards. A large house with a number of floors reached by an ancient staircase. We travelled with young adult daughters who found space enough to get along. Crossing a courtyard to reach 'your' part of the house and therefore very quiet. A small garden which is not overlooked. No problem with parking even during the vintage car fete our first weekend. In a good position to reach Loire chateaux. Ate the best meal we've had in France for years and so of the holiday at Fosse St Ange, just off the square and worth the trip just for that! |

We spent 2 weeks over the May half term with our 2 young children and friends with their children (thanks for letting us all go for just a small extra charge!!). We had an excellent time, the house is great and the enclosed courtyard and garden meant we didn't need to worry about the children - even in May the back garden is a real sun trap and we had b-b-q's every night. The children loved the park with the playground, deer to feed and plenty of space to ride their bikes. We want to go back in the summer and try out the local pool just next to the park. As well as cycling around the park we went off for lots of day trips cycling in Chinon, along the Loire and the Vienne. Thanks for the info in the book - the children (and the adults) really enjoyed the day out canoeing at Chinon- it was great to be dropped off upstream and just gently paddle back. The zoo (approx 45mins away) was also a massive hit. I would highly recommend this house to families/ friends, there's loads of outdoor activities in the region and plenty of vineyards to visit when the weather isn't so good! The balance of access to all the amenities in the town in a spacious and quiet house suited us perfectly. We have already booked again for next summer. Response: I hope you all enjoy the house again this summer -it's looking good! Many areas of the house and courtyard have been renovated and redecorated in the past three months ready for our Spring reopening! |

We had a really enjoyable stay at this townhouse right in the centre of Richelieu. The house was very comfortable, with a lovely secluded garden close to all amenities. We had our two dogs with us and they particularly loved the walks in the beautiful local park (as did we) which was just a few minutes walk from the house. It was also great to walk out to the markets and local shops during the daytime and to the lovely restaurants in the evenings. We also travelled to the many lovely towns which are all within easy reach. When we felt tired after our travels, it was also lovely to have a meal either in the kitchen/dining room or within the very quite back garden. We fell in love with Richelieu during our stay and definitely hope to return. |
