The Centre region
Enjoying some of the highest average number of sunshine hours recorded annually, this area also enjoys less rainfall than north of the Loire. With wonderful clear night skies, it is ideal for stargazing.
There are many chateaux within easy reach including the Forteresse Royale de Chinon (Jean D'Arc), Saumur, Montreuil-Bellay, Azay Le Rideau, "Sleeping Beauty's" chateau at Usse, Villandry with it's magnificent gardens, Oiron with modern art exhibitions, and many more. There are also lovely churches including the Abbaye de Fontevraud of Richard the Lionheart fame.
There is plenty to do in the area for all ages and tastes. You can visit the cities of Poitiers, Tours and Angers, plus the smaller towns of Chatellerault, Loudun, Chinon and Saumur. There are museums, troglodyte dwellings, the zoo at Doue-la-Fontaine, Futuroscope, the water sports centres at Moncontour and Parc de St. Cyr as well as many lovely gardens.
The area is great for cycling and walking.
The region is famous for it's wine (Touraine, Chinon, Saumur, Saumur-Champigny, Bourgeuil, etc). There are numerous producers and introductions can be made to the producers of our own particular favourites!
The historic walled town of Richelieu has shops, bars and restaurants and also the famous 300 year old Les Halles covered market place where a twice weekly market is held. It is thought that the road system, set out as it is in a grid system, was the model for the construction of New York. Further details of fetes, brocantes and wine fairs etc. held in the town and surrounding villages can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office which is situated opposite Les Halles.
There is a 1000 acre park ideal for bike rides, jogging and walking. Bikes can also be hired. The park originally surrounded the chateau built by Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century. It was pulled down at the end of the 19th century but it is still possible to visit the Orangery and Stables.
Golf is within a 40-minute drive and you can go swimming in Richelieu and St. Gervais Les Trois Clochers (11km.). There are also marked walks through forest and open countryside.

"Wow! Serenity unlike anywhere else!"
We arrived to a friendly warm welcome from hosts Glynnis and Mike and were promptly shown to our accomodation. Upon entering the Gite we were taken aback at how clean, bright and elegant the place really is. Photo's online of the Gite really do not to this place justice! Once we were settled in the amenities were 5 star and the location fantastic. The views span out from rolling hills to the distant sight of a modest yet beautiful chateaux. The location is far enough away from the noise of literally anything and night time shows a beautiful carpet of stars above and the rare comodity of silence! The Gite is nestled beautifully away from the local townships but close enough that you can go for a nice easy drive to the local markets of Richelieu or the bigger town of Chateleraux for anything you may need from supermarkets to boutique fashion stores. Glynnis and Mike were there to answer any of our questions and were always great to sit and chat to over a nice cuppa. I would highly recommend the Gite not only for its beautiful and relaxing nature but also for the charm and hospitality of its hosts! Oh, and the absolute beauty that is the French country side!
Many of our guests have said something similar about the gite being much bigger than they expected from the photos. Most of the room dimensions are mentioned in the description of the gite but guests do often say about the size of the gite as soon as they enter it. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to see you again sometime in the future.

"That 'holiday-glow' that doesn't fade"
This was our family's second visit to La Grange. This time choosing to fly and drive rather than drive all the way from the UK. We are a family ranging from toddlers to (hairy) teenagers. The relaxing experience increases with each visit; we are treated like old friends from the moment we make the initial booking enquiry, through to checking we are on the ground and in transit back home. The accommodation is spotless. Our hosts were warm and made every effort to make this holiday special. Again. All questions, however mundane are addressed. Even when we were caught out by a special early-close day M&G saved the day with some essentials and a bottle of wine. The location is so special - remote, private, yet accessible and central. The view from the garden as the sun sets is one of those special images that has been etched on my memory forever. We are now several months after arriving home from our 2014 stay at La Grange, and still have that "holiday-glow" from our time spent there. Looking at the photographs taken in 2012 and again this year we still feel drawn to return. Would recommend M&G's hospitality and perfect accommodation to all. Truly wonderful. Thank you.

"Lovely gite in a lovely location"
We had a great 2 weeks in this lovely gite near Richelieu. Mike & Glynis are great hosts and the location is lovely. Nothing negative to say at all - only positive memories of the place, people and garden fresh herbs and vegetables! We have no hesitation in recommending this accomodation to anyone. We've got 3 teenage girls and they had a great time; we probably didn't visit as many chateau as most visitors would - spent too much time relaxing - but the area has plenty of diversity. Some of the highlights were: Futuroscope - a very French take on a theme park Dinner at Fosse Saint Ange in Richelieu - exactly how I want a bistro to be - make sure you book Local markets - Lencloitre is massive but only on first Monday of each month Velo Rail at Chauvigny - Brilliant fun 'cycling' along a disused railway track the zoo at Doue la Fontaine - a Troglodyte zoo Parc St Cyr - Lake and beach with cheap kayak and pedalo hire

"Perfect for our young children and perfect for us"
I read the tripadvisor reviews for the Richelieu house rental before we booked and they collectively provide an accurate view - Mike and Glynis are the perfect hosts and the house is lovely. The following is to provide a little more insight for families considering whether to rent the property. The accommodation is immaculately presented and all on one floor (which is great thinking a two-year old in our party). At no point did we worry that our children were going to come to harm. It also has a great sense of space and we didn't feel on top of each other at all. The property includes an equally well-looked after large garden including two swings and a sand box as well as cherry trees that were full of blossom and gorgeous irises. The garden is effectively enclosed and allowed our two children to race around before and after we went out on day trips. However, in no sense does it feel like a playground as the garden is well tended and the swings tucked away. Mike and Glynis are themselves young grandparents and had some super suggestions of places to go including Doue la Fontaine for the wonderful bioparc (half zoo, half safari park but well managed and you get close to the predominantly well-looked after animals) and Chateau de Riveau which has a fairytale subtext in the landscaped gardens. Nearby Richelieu is a lovely small town with a good selection of local shops for main provisions, a small Carrefour and an Intermarche supermarket on the outskirts. The town is low key beautiful with water fountains in the main square and a huge park for the children to run around in. It is not part of the Loire main tourist drag partly due to location and partly as it doesn't have a core chateau still standing or "important" historical site. It does provide a clear impression of its opulent past with all the buildings built at the start of the 1700s and is perfect for meandering around. Very manageable with our children and no sense that we would lose them in a crowd or sense of insecurity at all. If there is a downside it isn't so close to the larger "headline" chateau, most of which are a good 45 minutes drive away or more but then you hopefully knew that before reading this review. To be fair, if staying in the heart of the Loire, there is still a fair amount of travelling between chteaux but if your ambition is to spend long days every day in one of the BIG chateaux you probably don't have young children and this place isn't perhaps for you. What we wanted was a relaxing, enjoyable and happy family break with places to go and see - both for us and for the children and we got this and more. (We did also venture to Azay as we hadn't seen it Mike and Glynis had been responsive from first contact and managing the booking and details to get there were all incredibly straight forward, while the house was perfectly laid out for our arrival, including a robust cot in perfect condition for our two-year old. A magical holiday with perfect accommodation and garden and unobtrusive and welcoming hosts. Highly recommended.
We loved having this family stay with us and look forward to welcoming them back again. Our only comment would be about the time taken to visit the various chateaux which they put at around 45 minutes. All the chateaux are spread out so wherever you choose to stay there would be some travelling involved but being France that would be on quiet roads and through beautiful countryside which is all part of the holiday.

"Our first gite - and a standard that others will find almost impossible to match."
From the welcome of the most hospitable owners to the time we left two weeks later, this was the most relaxing and peaceful holiday we have ever had - as my wife said at the end, this was the one holiday at the end of which we were not anxiously looking forward to going home. The gite is tastefully well-appointed, comfortable and well placed for a variety of attractions. My birthday dinner at Le Ricordeau (recommended and organised by Glynnis & Mike to save our miserable French) was memorable for the right reasons. We would heartily recommend La Grange to any larger group of travellers. There was even an early music festival at Richelieu that attracts the likes of Jordi Savall.

"Beautiful gite in peaceful surroundings"
The gite was everything we hoped for - beautifully appointed, well equipped and all on one level. The terrace was the ideal place for sitting with a glass of wine watching the sun go down over the rolling countryside. Richelieu, the closest town, has a small supermarket and a very good bread shop. There are some lovely lanes close by to wander down, with only the odd tractor on.

"Lovely place to stay"
La Grange occupies a lovely spot in a beautiful part of France. Entered via a courtyard shared with the owners, it has a completely private outlook over its own garden and onto the countryside beyond. The gite is a wonderfully quiet and relaxing place, spotlessly clean and with all the comforts of home. We wanted for nothing during our stay. The owners, Glynis & Mike, are perfect hosts - very welcoming and always available with help and advice but never intrusive. The welcome pack on arrival was a godsend as we arrived later than expected and an extra box of toys for the children was great for enticing them into the garden minus the ipods. We had a fantastic holiday at La Grange and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again or recommend it to others.

"Country Retreat with Benefits"
From first sight on the internet we liked La Grange. We were a group of 4 ladies and 2 men, middle aged with some disabilities. From our first contact with Mike & Glynis everything went like clockwork. Then we arrived... La Grange, the property, surpassed our expectations and then we checked the frig... Glynis had supplied enough of the local produce to ensure our shopping could wait untill the morning. As a group we found the size of the house was more than adequate, we had our own private areas and the kitchen was large enough for all of us to be in there helping and preparing meals. The house was beautifully appointed and very clean with excellent linen and towels. The lawns and gardens were a sight to behold... almost manicured. We would recommend this property and the hosts, Mike and Glynis, without hesitation. The only recommendation we could make would be a rubber tyred hand truck to help carry the heavy luggage along the gravel pathway.
Many thanks for a lovely 5-star review. This is much appreciated. We always ask guests on arrival if they would like help with their luggage but in this instance help was refused. We do have a small truck for our benefit as much as the visitors which would have been available if required.

"Second Visit - just as good as first"
This was our second visit to the gite, returning this time with our eldest daughter. Again we were not disappointed, Glynis and Mike have done a wonderful job and will go out of their way to help with any queries, bookings, directions, local wine recommendations, etc. They are always on hand when needed but seem to "disappear" for the rest of the time. This is one of the best gites we have stayed at in France. The gite itself is very spacious, well laid out and full of everything you might need (just like being at home). This gite is at the luxury end of the scale and anyone visiting should not be disappointed. Everything provided is of high quality and in top class condition. There is a BBQ and private garden with direct access to a much larger area for children to play football, etc. The area is ideal for sight seeing, with the Loire valley chateaux within an hours drive, Le Riveau, Chinon, Azay le Rideau, Usse, etc are well worth a visit. Richelieu has a large park, fishing and plenty of shopping facilities. Larger hypermarkets are available at Chatellarault and Chinon. Well done Glynis and Mike - keep it up we will be back!

"Thank you Glynis & Mike for sharing your beautiful gite. We will be back!"
There are two things that make this accommodation extra special. First, the gite really is excellent. Not only is it in an idyllic setting, it is spacious and well-stocked. It has been beautifully decorated throughout and beyond the immediate garden is a tree-lined orchard and green fields. Our young children loved playing outside (one is four, the other is eighteen months). Second, Glynis & Mike helped to ensure our family holiday was perfect. They were on hand when we needed them but seemed to disappear when we were enjoying family time. The balance was perfect. They gave us honest recommendations and advice on planning trips, which was extremely useful. They were really friendly, bringing toys for the children, making bookings at nearby restaurants and generally going out of their way for us. While a car is needed, there are many attractions within a short drive. We have already suggested the gite to family and friends, but we would also like to go back ourselves.
