The Loire Valley / Indre-et-Loire region

Enjoying some of the highest average number of sunshine hours recorded annually, this area also enjoys less rainfall than north of the Loire. With wonderful clear night skies, it is ideal for stargazing.
There are many chateaux within easy reach including the Forteresse Royale de Chinon (Jean D'Arc), Saumur, Montreuil-Bellay, Azay Le Rideau, "Sleeping Beauty's" chateau at Usse, Villandry with it's magnificent gardens, Oiron with modern art exhibitions, and many more. There are also lovely churches including the Abbaye de Fontevraud of Richard the Lionheart fame.
There is plenty to do in the area for all ages and tastes. You can visit the cities of Poitiers, Tours and Angers, plus the smaller towns of Chatellerault, Loudun, Chinon and Saumur. There are museums, troglodyte dwellings, the zoo at Doue-la-Fontaine, Futuroscope, the water sports centres at Moncontour and Parc de St. Cyr as well as many lovely gardens.
The area is great for cycling and walking.
The region is famous for it's wine (Touraine, Chinon, Saumur, Saumur-Champigny, Bourgeuil, etc). There are numerous producers and introductions can be made to the producers of our own particular favourites!
The Richelieu area
The historic walled town of Richelieu has shops, bars and restaurants and also the famous 300 year old Les Halles covered market place where a twice weekly market is held. It is thought that the road system, set out as it is in a grid system, was the model for the construction of New York. Further details of fetes, brocantes and wine fairs etc. held in the town and surrounding villages can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office which is situated opposite Les Halles.
There is a 1000 acre park ideal for bike rides, jogging and walking. Bikes can also be hired. The park originally surrounded the chateau built by Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century. It was pulled down at the end of the 19th century but it is still possible to visit the Orangery and Stables.
Golf is within a 40-minute drive and you can go swimming in Richelieu and St. Gervais Les Trois Clochers (11km.). There are also marked walks through forest and open countryside.

The gite is of a high quality with spacious living and sleeping accommodation. The bathrooms have bath and shower and the showers are excellent! All mod cons. Wifi is a definite bonus and there are English satellite TV stations. The entrance to the gite overlooks the garden and open countryside and feels secluded. Glynis and Mike's house is around the corner and they are happy to provide assistance whenever required but otherwise leave you to enjoy the gite in privacy. The opportunity to book a two course cooked meal the evening of our arrival was very welcome and tasted delicious. No need to rush out to the supermarket with the welcome pack of basic food essentials provided. We had a lovely week in this gite and would definitely recommend it. We visited a lot of the main Loire sites but also relaxed in spacious and comfortable surroundings. Glynis and Mike are excellent hosts who make every effort to make you feel welcome. |

La Grange is amazing - beautifully renovated and furnished, with all home comforts. Extremely well-equipped kitchen and luxurious bathrooms. Owners are very friendly and helpful, yet discreet. Would highly recommend the meal offered on the first night, it was superb and a great start to the holiday. Perfect for a relaxing break in rural France. |

Our stay in the gite of Mike and Glynis Demaine was what made our holiday the most peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable holiday we have had as a family in many many years. Over the years, we have not had accommodation that was as welcoming, comfortable, clean, well-tended and inviting as the gite that has been crafted by the most welcoming hosts we have had the pleasure in staying with. Mike and Glynis Demaine are, in all likelihood, the most devoted people we have met. Their devotion to their home, neighbourhood and business has resulted in these entreprenours handcrafting a home and gite that has all the character and style of the local architechure that makes you feel like you are coming home to a house you have known all your life and Mike and Glynis welcome you as if you are family they have long-waited to see. Their hospitality is great. A glorious welcome package of local goods for a wonderous breakfast and a home-cooked meal from Glynis' kitchen awaits weary travellers after a long journey. If you wish to visit this area of France, which is filled with undimmed beauty both natural and made by men many hundreds of years ago, then there is nowhere better to come back to than Mike and Glynis' Gite. |

It has been a pleasure to stay at La Grange. We all enjoyed the experience immensely. The gite itself is spectacular-clean, well presented and very welcoming, as are Glynis and Mike. We have spent many hours sight-seeing around the beautiful countryside and enjoyed returning "home" to the gite each evening. Thank you both so much and we look forward to returning again.

This is the best gite we have ever stayed in. It has been a wonderful holiday and we hope to return-although next time for two weeks! One has not been enough. La Grange really is first class accommodation and Glynis and Mike are the most lovely hosts. It has been our first family holiday with our little one (10 months) and it has been great. We have stayed in at least 8 gites and none of the hosts were comparable to Mike & Glynis. This lovely gite is more in the villa class.

June 2011.
Had a lovely time at the gite. Our 3 "wee" ones (5,6 & 8) really enjoyed running round the garden (1.12 minutes the fastest time!) trying to catch lizards (luckily they got nowhere close) and experiencing the French culture. The kids top trips were the "beach" at St. Cyr, Chateau du Riveau (full of fairytale characters-fun for all big and small) and feeding the dear in Richelieu park (don't forget the bread). Glynis & Mike, thanks for being so welcoming and such good hosts.

June 2011.
A true delight and credit to your hard work, Glynis & Mike. Perfect hospitality and we found the gite perfectly equipped (we couldn't think of anything you hadn't thought of!) Our nearly 2 year old has enjoyed himself all week, slept well in the cot and felt very at home. We are sure visitors to come will find the same experience.

A very high quality gite that has been a pleasure to stay in! The Welcome Pack enabled us to settle in before having to do any grocery shopping. We've spent a week relaxing and sightseeing. Montsoreau is a little gem with Villandry quite a contrast in its magnificence. We had a fun day at Futuroscope and L'Abbaye de Fontevraud is not to be missed. Our thanks to Glynis and Mike.

August 2011.
Well this has been our second stay at the gite in as many years. We were so taken with the first time we immediately booked ir again for next year. Our stay here has been eventful with many Chateaux under our belts as well as wine tastings. The hospitality of the Demaines was, as ever, of the highest consideration and standard, and as it was our second visit we wre treated like family returning home after a long stay away. Saumur, Fontevraud, Villandryand Montreuil-Bellay are not to be missed.
S. J. P. & J. Dunstable, England.
August 2011.
A lovely gite-the best we've ever stayed in. Lovely to find somewhere so well equipped, clean and well looked after. We enjoyed having so much space inside and out. The girls especially enjoyed the swings and slide and trying to befriend the lizards! Thanks Glynis & Mike. We particularly appreciated your comprehensive Welcome Pack.
