The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne region in the South west of France is still one of the most beautiful unspoilt region in Europe, from rolling hills with vineyards and sunflowers and fruit and veg. of every description , to flowing rivers where canoeing and fishing and any other water sport can be enjoyed , the markets are the best farmer markets in France with Riberac considered one of the best (10 kms away)Beautiful villages in any direction( Aubeterre just 8kms away one of the prettiest villages in France with the largest monolithic underground church in Europe , with the quaint streets lined with artisan shops ) St Emillion , a medieval village famous world wide for its red wines is situated on a hill overlooking the Dordogne valley .
Les Simons is in the beautiful diverse Dordogne , but on the cusp of the Charante which has distinct countryside of its own , beautiful beaches within less than 2 hours , world famous Royan and La Rochelle just up the autoroute for a different day out with unsurpassed views of the French farming communities .
Bordeaux is less than 2hrs down the auto route , its like a smaller version of Paris ,(great shopping) with its famous Medoc wine area Chateau Margaux and Rothchild to mention just a few , if you are interested in Wines or just curious great day out .
Riberac / St Paul Lizonne area
Riberac is the closest big town with everything you might need , huge supermarkets , shops , best markets in the areas , and all kinds of leisure activities .It is situated on the river Donne so has all kinds of river activities , there are great restaurants , thai , italian and of course French in all price ranges , we found great choices of food and great service and even if you are dont speak French most people speak a little bit of English and the menus are often translated , no problem ordering .
Down the hill from the house is a little village St Severin 1.5kms with Spar supermarket , restaurant and Boulangerie .
Around the corner on the way into the village is a hotel restaurant owned by a really nice young couple , they have 9 on suite rooms and run one of the best restaurant we have ever eaten in , the chef is English and the food is all fresh and mostly home grown with an excellent choice for the English palate with an French flair.
How to get there
Cheap flights to Bergerac , (less than an hour ) to Limoges 110 Km. , Bordeaux 125 Km , Poitiers 140 Km , the airports are small and it is possible to be in your rent -a -car on your way through the beautiful Dordonge within 15 mins .
France has a really great road system , easy to find your way even if you do not speak French, the long distance traveller can travel the auto routes which are fast and not congested so if you decide like many others to come by Eurotunnel or ferry ( the choices are extensive, Calais , St Malo, Caen, La Rochelle ,Cherburg etc ) check whats best for you , and can be a lovely way to see France and get ready for a week by the pool .
