The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
This area is one of the most beautiful and popular regions of south west France. The north eastern corner of inland Aquitaine (known as the Perigord Vert) offers much for visitors including chateaux, forests, beautiful medieval towns and villages, markets, unspoilt countryside, rivers, caves and more. Explore the magical Dordogne and visit the renowned Lascaux Caves; gardens at Marqueyssac; Sarlat la Caneda (regional centre); Dordogne’s castles; and the prehistoric caves in the Les Eyzies region in the Vezere Valley.
A short drive will bring you to the superb medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile, this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the River Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Many brilliant restaurants complete the experience – you will want to come back. Boat trips available.
About 7km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles offering two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th -14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th) with a remarkable collection of furniture. On the River Dronne, you can rent a canoe.
Just a short distance away is the town of Riberac which is renowned for its Friday market – the best in the area and one not to miss.
Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries.
Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure situated out in the woods. You can view a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair which was carefully restored after WW2. This chateau contains suburb Aubasson tapestries, fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.
Within easy driving distance of La Germanie is the town of Nontron (21 miles north) which has attractive lakes providing ideal picnic sites. Nontron stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts with a picturesque 18th century chateau. This is a perfect place for children to enjoy the lively museum of dolls, models, games and toys. Also, consider visiting the satirical puppets from the Bebete TV show (like the English Spitting Image).
Going a little way east from La Germanie and just over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne. Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterre is the underground church of St John. Carved entirely out of rock, the main naïve reaches a height of 20m. All places have a nominal entrance charge.
Riberac / La Tour Blanche area
In La Tour Blanche, you will find an excellent baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, post office, tabac/bar and the Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (excellent fixed priced set menu Mon-Fri lunchtimes). Excellent supermarket - Le Clerc, Intermarche - in Riberac, 25 mins away.
Verteillac, 15 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar Le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon-Fri as well as a selection of other dishes.
There is also a bank and a cash machine at Lisle about 10 mins away. You will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle has a doctor and a pharmacy.
Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures can be found on our own website. There is also an excellent information folder in the house covering safety procedures, ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit.
