The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Acquitaine/Dordogne is one of the most beautiful and popular regions to visit in the south west of France. The north eastern corner of inland Aquitaine (known as the Perigord Vert) offers much for visitors, of all ages, including beautiful medieval towns and villages, outdoor markets, fabulous shopping, unspoilt countryside, chateaux, rivers and caves. There's something for everyone to experience and thoroughly enjoy.

Outdoor markets? Several are available in nearby towns. Just a short distance away is the town of Riberac which is renowned for its Friday market – the best in the area and one not to miss. Surround yourself with the wonderful aromas of fabulous cheese, flowers, fruit and vegetables and explore the extraordinary choice of local goods.

A short drive from La Germanie will bring you to the superb medieval town of Brantome and the wide array of shops, cafes and the remarkable and ancient abbey. With its soaring campanile, this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves which were used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the River Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Boat trips available.

Visit the pretty and very popular village of Bourdeilles. Sample the cafes and their delicous menus and wine or organise a canoe trip down the River Dronne. Offering two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress and a Renaissance palace with a remarkable collection of furniture. Picnic on the River Dronne's banks.

What about caves? Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries. A treat for kids and adults alike.

Aubeterre sur Dronne has charming narrow streets that wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages.

Nontron has attractive lakes providing ideal picnic sites. The town stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts with a picturesque 18th century chateau. This is a perfect place for children to enjoy the lively museum of dolls, models, games and toys.

Riberac

Our local shops are in La Tour Blanche where you will find an excellent baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, post office, tabac/bar and the very popular Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (excellent fixed priced set menu Mon-Fri lunchtimes).

Excellent supermarket - Le Clerc, Intermache - in Riberac.

Verteillac, 15 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar Le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon-Fri as well as a selection of other dishes.

There is also a bank and a cash machine at Lisle about 10 mins away. You will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle has a doctor and a pharmacy.

Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures can be found on our own website. There is also an excellent information folder in the house providing ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit.

"We loved it! So much so, that we want to live there! We would buy it!"

We drove over with the dog and just loved the area, with beautiful walking and enchanting villages and towns to visit. The accommodation met our needs and the dog was happy - we were especially pleased that the garden was fenced. We were able to enjoy the pool too.

We found Le Pigonniere through a friend of a friend that had stayed previously and the owners were friendly and helpful, giving us lots of tips for walking, visiting and eating out. We found the house pretty easily, as the information pack was detailed and clear.

"Poor value for price"

Upon arrival we were far from impressed to find ourselves confronted by a set of tiled stairs that were extremely dirty (it was quite obvious they had been not cleaned for some considerable time) and in a poor state of repair which included cracked and loose tiles - all in all risk to any persons safety particularly when ascending in wet weather or in the dark.

The condition of the balcony serving the Gite was also dirty but made even worse by when we found quite a considerable accumulation of mouse droppings directly outside the entrance to the Gite door.

On entering the living room we were both shocked at the dirty condition of both of the settees (bed settees) which were covered in food and 'other' stains.

The wc was not located in the upstairs bathroom or indeed any where else in the Gite where one could get a 'little' privacy but directly off and in full view/hearing distance of any one utilising the living room.

The curtains acting as covers to the shelving/storage area in the in the kitchen were held up by very flimsy/old net rods which continually fell off throughout our stay.

The stairs leading to bedrooms and bathroom were very shabby or it may even be that they had been left unfinished.

Due to the shape of the bathroom and position of the bath unless you happened to be very short in stature or a young child taking a shower was totally impossible.

The stand to the whb in the bathroom had not been secured properly and continually moved

No attempt had been made to cover the unsightly holes behind the bathroom whb left by what one can only presume to have been an old bathroom appliance.

The window serving the bathroom looked shabby due to parts of the internal frame starting to fall away.

The carpet strips to both bedrooms and bathroom had not been secured property and where potential trip hazard.

The BBQ was filthy, and as a result unusable.

The area around the pool was in much the same state as the stairs and balcony serving the Gite. It appeared that some attempt had been made to clean the area but whom ever was assigned this task had given up half way around.

The sunbed and seat cushions were found to be covered in mouse droppings and had to be cleaned before we could use them.

We would conclude this email by making it very clear that we have over many years rented a number of Gites, all at a similar rental value to that paid for yours, in most cases the same including the one rented prior to our arrival at Le Germani. We have never found any reason to complain about any of these properties and it has to be said that this was due to them all having first class amenities and being extremely clean

You know what it's like when you get sudden bad news in the family. It can hit you hard and you are knocked back on your heels.

So it was when we had sent back this customer's security deposit inside 5 days - instead of the published 21days. In response we received this unpleasant review. We were later told it would be published UNLESS we returned 50% of his rental fee. As we have great family pride in the quality of our two Perigord properties we immediately asked our local maintenance managers to investigate, and to ensure that such allegations can never be made again.

No such reviews have come from our many clients over four years. We are confident that the current upsurge of enquiries from returning and new visitors will not be affected by this set of unsubstantiated allegations.
