The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The village of Celles is located in the heart of the scenic Dordogne region and only 25 km from its capital, the city of Perigueux. And 6 km from Verteillac, a very lively village with two superb cafes. These are the nearest eating places to Celles.
Not far away is the delightful medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Loads of brilliant restaurants complete the experience – you will come back!. There are also boats trips available.
Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries.
Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2
Riberac / Celles area
‘Les Crozes” is in a small hamlet near to La Tour Blanche and Chapdeuil. La Tour Blanche is a picturesque village about a 5-10 min drive away. Ideal for day to day shopping.
Riberac is about 15 mins away and has a good supermarket, a lively square with many bars, cafes and restaurants. The Friday market is real fun - very large. Don't forget to check out the ones in the side streets as well. Bourdeille Castle is about 15 mins away and Perigueux and Brantome are 30 mins away..
In La Tour Blanche you will find an excellent baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, Post Office, tabac/bar and the Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (excellent fixed priced set menu Mon - Fri lunchtimes). Excellent supermarket - Leclerc - in Riberac, 25 mins away.
Verteillac, 15 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, Bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon - Fri as well as a selection of other dishes. There is also a bank and a cash machine.
At Lisle, about 10 mins away, you will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor and a pharmacy. Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures
There is also an excellent Information Folder in the house covering ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit.
How to get there
By ferry from UK we recommend the use of Speed Ferries (www.speedferries.com) Dover - Boulogne. Their rates are very competitive and the journey is only 1 hour. The distance from Boulogne is 760kms and takes about 8 hours. (Boulogne-Rouen-Le Mans-Poitiers- Angouleme)
By air to Bergerac we suggest Ryan Air they have a almost daily service from Stanstead they are cheap if you book ahead. Alternatively Flybe from Exeter or Southampton or sometimes Gatwick We understand that Ryan Air have just announced that they are flying into Angouleme starting in the Spring.
Rentals cars are available from a large number of rental companies at Bergerac You can book Hertz thru Ryan Air and their rates are competitive. Europecar, Avis are also available. You are very lucky if you get the model car you book with all of them!!
