BookThe Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Acquitaine/Dordogne is one of the most beautiful and popular regions to visit in the south west of France. The north eastern corner of inland Aquitaine (known as the Perigord Vert) offers much for visitors, of all ages, including beautiful medieval towns and villages, outdoor markets, fabulous shopping, unspoilt countryside, chateaux, rivers and caves. There's something for everyone to experience and thoroughly enjoy.
Outdoor markets? Several are available in nearby towns. Just a short distance away is the town of Riberac which is renowned for its Friday market – the best in the area and one not to miss. Surround yourself with the wonderful aromas of fabulous cheese, flowers, fruit and vegetables and explore the extraordinary choice of local goods.
A short drive from La Germanie will bring you to the superb medieval town of Brantome and the wide array of shops, cafes and the remarkable and ancient abbey. With its soaring campanile, this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with caves which were used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the River Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Boat trips available.
Visit the pretty and very popular village of Bourdeilles. Sample the cafes and their delicous menus and wine or organise a canoe trip down the River Dronne. Offering two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress and a Renaissance palace with a remarkable collection of furniture. Picnic on the River Dronne's banks.
What about caves? Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries. A treat for kids and adults alike.
Aubeterre sur Dronne has charming narrow streets that wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages.
Nontron has attractive lakes providing ideal picnic sites. The town stands high up on a rock fortified by massive ramparts with a picturesque 18th century chateau. This is a perfect place for children to enjoy the lively museum of dolls, models, games and toys.
The Riberac area
Our local shops are in La Tour Blanche where you will find an excellent baker, butcher, general store, pharmacy, post office, tabac/bar and the very popular Chez Fernand bar/restaurant (excellent fixed priced set menu Mon-Fri lunchtimes).
Excellent supermarket - Le Clerc, Intermache - in Riberac.
Verteillac, 15 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar Le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon-Fri as well as a selection of other dishes.
There is also a bank and a cash machine at Lisle about 10 mins away. You will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle has a doctor and a pharmacy.
Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures can be found on our own website. There is also an excellent information folder in the house providing ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit.

La Grange was a welcome retreat after travelling through Spain on my return to England. I particularly enjoyed chilling in the cheery kitchen for morning coffee, or venturing out into the pretty back garden on the days when the sun showed itself. The rooms were comfortable and spacious and the facilities up to spec. My bedroom was light and well furnished, with tasteful decoration and it faced out to the rear with the sun streaming in first thing. In the evenings I enjoyed watching television or listening to music on the sound system. I scoured the library off the sitting room and spent many hours reading in the many sun spots in the house and garden. The local vicinity is quite beautiful and I drove into the small towns and villages to shop and eat and walked the canal walks when the weather permitted. The two weeks I spent at La Grange hold very good memories and I would definitely return to repeat the experience. There was so much that I missed! It is such a stunning part of France and La Grange was everything I was looking for in a holiday property. |
