The Dordogne region

The Dordogne has been popular with British visitors for many years. The sunshine and the colours of the blue sky, reddish soils and the stone houses with their terracotta tiled roofs make it enchantingly beautiful. The extensive fields of sunflowers in July and August are also a wonderful sight. The summers are warm to hot. Places of interest include Aubeterre sur Dronne, officially one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France (20 minutes); Perigueux, a town with lovely winding alleyways and a recently restored cathedral (40 minutes); Sarlat, a foie gras centre with beautful yellow stone buildings (one and a half hours); and the prehistoric sites around Les Eyzies (around 2 hours).

Wine lovers should not miss St Emilon, less than an hour and a half away, which not only offers a wide range of wine tasting options but is also stunningly beautiful and forms part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. The city of Bordeaux, which features wonderful civic architecture along the river and a wide range of large and small shops, is only an hour and a half away.

Riberac is a small market town which has a good range of shops including 2 large supermarkets. There is a good choice of restaurants and several little cafes where you can just sit and watch the world go by. The market on Fridays is one of the best in the Dordogne and not to be missed.

In summer there are open-air concerts in the evening in the main square, and the increasingly popular Grand Souk music festival is held in July.

Sports facilities include canoeing on the River Dronne, cycle hire, horse riding, tennis courts and the public swimming pool, plus the swimming lake at La Jemaye (20 minutes away) which is popular with locals and visitors alike.
