The Aegean Islands region
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, a group of twelve islands adjacent to the Aegean coastline of Turkey. The Knights of St John were resident on the Dodecanese between the 4th and 6th century AD, and built castles on each of the islands. While the dodecanese islands are grouped closely together, there is a wide diversity in landscape, culture and traditions on each island. If you have never visited Greece before, expect a laid-back, restful experience. Greek people are extremely warm and friendly, and the family is central to Greek culture, so children are always welcomed in bars and restaurants.
Rhodes / Lindos area
The beautiful island of Rhodes is commonly known as the 'Island of the Sun' as it usually boasts at least 300 days of sunshine per year. The landscape is diverse, ranging from stunning mountains to the interior, and endless beaches and quiet coves, some with Blue Flag status, most of which are easily accessible by car. Rhodes is steeped in ancient history, relics can be found all around the island. In particular, the remains of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, can be seen in the UNESCO world heritage town of Rhodes to the North of the island. Also well worth a visit in Rhodes town are the Palace of the Grand Masters and the archaeological museum, and the cosmopolitan harbour region, where you can view the many yachts and boats while enjoying Greek meze in one of the many portside tavernas. From Rhodes harbour, ferries to neighbouring Symi or Turkey can be caught for day trips. Lindos is an unforgettable experience, a stunning village of whitewashed 'sugar cube' houses lie under the imposing acropolis dating back to 2000bc. There are 4 beaches, ranging from a popular beach with watersports in high season, to a quiet cove in the enchanting St Pauls bay. On an evening, choose from a vast range of rooftop tavernas, each offering stunning views of Lindos by night. Nightlife on Rhodes is suited to all tastes, from traditional Greek evenings to modern nightclubs to romantic evenings enjoying the beautful sunset. An award winning par 72 golf course is located at Afandou, 16 miles from Pilona. Also, there is a large waterpark in Faliraki, and Prasonissi, on the Southernmost tip of the island, is a haven for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Attractions on the island include the Valley of the Butterflies, the habitat of hundreds of thousands of Quadrina butterflies during the Summer months, and Epta Piges (seven springs), a woodland paradise, with a crystal clear lake and a kilometre-long pitch black ancient aquaduct tunnel through which braver individuals can walk! The West coast of the island is largely unspolit and many ancient monastaries can be visited in spectacular locations. To the interior, visit Siena to taste Souma, the local firewater, and Embonas, home to several vineyards open to the public for wine tasting - just make sure someone else is driving! The village of Pilona is situated just a few minutes drive fom Lindos, and it's location allows easy accessibility to all the attractions Rhodes has to offer, including a large beach less than five minutes drive away. Pilona is a tranquil, laid back village, but still offers two tavernas offering excellent traditional Greek food, a village shop and children's playground. A large supermarket is within a couple of minutes drive.
How to get there
Independant flights are now becoming more accessible from most major UK airports. Main airlines include Easyjet, Jet2, Monarch airways, XL, and Olympic. From elsewhere in Europe, Wizz and Aegean fly to Rhodes. Rhodes is also accessible by ferry from Athens (to Rhodes town).
There are many car hire companies on Rhodes, we would recommend Hertz, Rodos cars, and George cars (www.georgecars.com) who will all deliver cars to the airport for you.
