The Aegean Islands region
The Aegean Islands are a large group of islands in the Aegean Sea. The most easterly group of the Greek Islands, they enjoy a good year round climate and plenty of historical interest. The advantage of Rhodes is its proximity to other smaller islands and also the coastline of Turkey. After taking in the historical wonders of Rhodes you can enjoy a short boat trip across the water to Marmaris and experience the bazaars. From Rhodes you can also make short boat journeys to Symi, Chalki and, a little further afield, Kos. Rhodes is a perfect holiday destination as direct flights fly from the UK and most of Europe from April-October.
Rhodes / Lindos area
Rhodes is the largest and most easterly of the Dodecanese Islands and enjoys over 300 days of sunshine every year. The spectacular history of the island has gives it a unique ability to offer evidence and experience of many different cultures. The island has been under the control of many different nationalities including the Italians and Germans and has been invaded countless times by the Turkish and some Arab nations. This is due to the islands perfect military location between Eurpope, Asia and Africa. Each culture has left their mark on the island, from the Italian Spas at Kallithea and Mussolini's hotel at Profitas Ilias. The Turkish have mosques and other stylistic buildings in the main roads town and the destruction caused in WW2 is evident from the ruined castle at Haraki. We must not, of course, forget the Greeks! The island was only handed back to Greece in 1947 after occupation by the Italians. But the real history to the island has been left by the ancient Greeks. From the thousands of years old remains of Kamiros, to the magnificent Acropolis of Lindos, the engineering feats of the Ancient Greeks is ever dominant in Rhodes. Lindos is the most photographed village in the whole of Greece. With its ancient white washed houses clinging to the hillside and the narrow cobbled streets unpassable by cars, Lindos has retained much of its character over thousands of years. Overlooked by the magnificent Acropolis, perched high on the hilltop, Lindos is a vey popular destination for both holiday makers and day-trippers, who visit the village to shop in the market. It is like stepping back in time to the years of St John and his Knights. Lindos has not been left behind, however, when it comes to giving visitors what they want- there are a plethora of shops, bars, tavernas, restaurants and even a handful of night clubs for those who like to party into the early hours. Pefkos is a very popular destination for couples, groups and families. There are 2 beautiful sandy beaches and many shops, bars and restaurants to cater for any need. Both Pefkos and Lindos have supermarkets, pharmacies and all other local amenities.
How to get there
You can fly to Rhodes from most UK airports and the flight time is approx. 4 hours. Thomson, Thomas Cook, Easyjet and XL all offer direct flights. Villa Alex is located on the on the east coast of Rhodes just 5km from Lindos. There is only one main road on the east coast of the island so getting to Kalathos from the airport is easy. The drive from the airport to the villa is approximatley 40 minutes. There are many car hire companies on the island who will meet you at the airport with your car and then pick it up from the airport on the day of your departure. Please ask us for more information about car hire. Full directions and maps to the villa are supplied on booking.
