The Aegean Islands region

The Aegean Islands to the south east of the Greek mainland are diversely charismatic, with varied landscapes but the same tradition and cultures of friendliness and hospitality.

An ideal place for your Mediterranean holidays on the island where the sun shines more days than anywhere else in Europe. Rhodes island is the fourth biggest island in Greece. It is part of the Aegean islands. It has history of more than 3000 years. In Rhodes there are a lot of archeological sightseeings, such as the Acropolis of Lindos, Rhodes old town, the ancient Kamiros town, the ancient Filerimos town, the butterfly valley, the castle of Kritinia, the castle of Monolithos and many other ancient castles. In Rhodes old town you can visit the biggest museum of the island and see a lot of ancient items.

Rhodes

Located in the Rhodes Botanical Garden area of Fytorio, the luxurious Villa The Grande Dame, enjoys an enviable setting with breathtaking scenery. It is close to a number of beautiful beaches, the closest being Paradise Beach which is only 2.2 km away.

The old town of Rhodes is just a 5 minute drive away from the villa. Rhodes is the largest settlement and capital city of the island. It is famous as the ancient site of the Colossus (c 280BC), which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and as the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. Rhodes was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1988. As you wander from the main, newer part of Rhodes with its shops, restaurants and facilities, and over the outer wall and moat into the old town, it's like stepping back in time. Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops and cafes are scattered throughout the Old Town of Rhodes. 'Odos Socratous' or the Socratous street, is the main street to buy gifts to take home, it is just off the main square, on its left is the castle. The old town is full of tiny little streets which lead to many monuments and several museums - make sure to get a good map. If you want to see it all, plan for at least a day, and two will not be amiss if you want to see all the museums.

Just a few kilometres away is the village of Koskinou which consists of 2 parts: The old village and the newer coastal area. The newer area of Koskinou is well known for its narrow streets, the churches and the its traditional old houses. It has numerous cafes and tavernas where you can enjoy delicious food and good wine. The old village of Koskinou has beautiful cobbled streets and whitewashed squares filled with flowers. The village has a great archaeological interest and rich history since the 4th century AD.

Kalithea Springs is just a few minutes away by car and is located between the two holiday resorts, Kalithea and Faliraki, in the northern part of Rhodes. Kalithea Springs is a spa which dates back to the classical Antiquity, but the current facilities were built by the Italians in 1929. After a thorough renovation, the beautiful facilities reopened as a museum with an adjoining beach in the summer of 2007. The beach here is fairly small but it is peaceful and the surroundings are very beautiful. It is located in a bay with sun lounges on both sides. On the one side, there is also a restaurant/café. The beach is a mixture of sand, gravel and pebbles and the water is shallow and calm. There is a small entrance fee to Kalithea Springs, however, the sun loungers are free.

At Afandou beach some 12 kilometres south of the villa, families with picnics, and young people racing their jet-skis mingle happily with the locals coming for fish at the local tavernas. There is plenty of room for everyone on the huge beach at Afandou. It has a sandy beach with some pebbles, and the sea deepens quite abruptly. There are a small number of small restaurants, beach sports centres and fish tavernas that line the beach road. On the coast road you will find the golf course and set back across the road, course, is the traditiona village of Afandou with its laid back atmosphere together with a good range of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Approximately 18 kilometres south, Tsambika is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes. A long, broad beach with fine, golden sand it has various eating establishments and a beach sports centre where you can hire jet skis. Apart from these, and a mini-market, there is absolutely nothing else here except for locals and holiday makers who come to swim in the crystal-clear water and delight in the imposing rock on which the Monastery of the Virgin of Tsambika sits - from which the beach has taken its name. The virgin of Tsampika is said to work miracles and young woman having difficulty in conceiving often pray for her aid and walk up to pay a visit to the monastery. If their prayers are answered, they name the child after the Virgin.

Further south is the iconic village of Lindos which is approximately 52 kilometres from Rhodes town on the South East side of the island. It is the most famous example of a Greek village with its sugar cubed houses. Steeped in history with its Ancient Acropolis dominating the view, this charming village has restaurants and bars and 4 beaches to enjoy.

The natural beauty of the island of Rhodes, and the monuments from its long and often turbulent history, combine a lively present with a rich historical past. It offers a great variety of cultural and sports activities. You can enjoy sailing, scuba diving, windsurfing, golf and tennis. You can explore the island's places of interest such as the Valley of Butterflies; a tranquil spot where during July and August thousands of butterflies come to reproduce and charm us with their beauty. Alternatively, you can take a daytrip on a boat to Symi or one of the other neighbouring islands.
