The Reykjavik region
The world’s most northerly capital combines colourful buildings, quirky people, a wild nightlife and a capricious soul to devastating effect. Most visitors fall helplessly in love, returning home already saving to come back.
The city’s charm lies in its many peculiar contrasts, which, like tectonic plates clashing against one another, create an earthquake of energy.
Reykjavík offers a bewitching combination of village innocence and big-city zeal. It’s populated by darkly cynical citizens who are nevertheless filled with unstoppable creativity and enthusiasm.
In summer the streets are washed by 22 hours of daylight; in winter they’re scoured by blizzards and doused in never-ending night. Reykjavík is a city that treasures its Viking past but wants the future – the very best of it – NOW!
Reykjavik City area
There are two big grocery shops, where you can get fresh bred and a pharmacy only 5 min. walk from the flat. Also only 5 min. away is a pizzeria. A little further at the harbour (aprox 7min. walk) is an excellent hamburger joint, a small sushi restaurant and the famous Sea Baron who is famous for his lobster soup. There are 2 outdoor swimming pools close to the flat.
Ski lifts or Runs : can be reached by driving for 60 minutes. The skiing area is open when road conditions, snow and weather permit.
Shopping and Dining: can be reached by walking for 5 minutes. Shops, coffee houses, restaurants are all in short walking distance from the apartment. Dining in Reykjavik is a culinary celebration of fresh ingredients and cultural variety. There are over 170 restaurants in the greater Reykjavik area.
Reykjavik's primary shopping district centres on its main artery, Laugavegur, in the downtown area. A selection of boutiques, designer labels, arts and crafts galleries and jewelery design shops and well as the famous 66°north shop and the Blue lagoon shop.
In Iceland the sea is normally far too cold to tempt swimmers, but at Nautholsvik bay in Reykjavik, a thermal beach has been created, where natural hot water flows out into the sea, and you can frolic in the waves as if you were in the Mediterranean! A beach of golden sand has been created and a “pool” has been enclosed nearby, where the water temperature is about 20ºC.
