"Quiet, delightful and comfortable"
This was our first trip to Iceland and decided that doing our own thing by hiring a car and self catering was the best for us. The apartment was ideal, located in a quiet residential street, it is no more than 40 minutes form the airport and is easy to find - ask the owner for directions at time of booking. Note, the location shown on the website map is not correct, the apartment is located south west of Reykjavik in Garðabær. However, this is still only 10 minutes drive into the centre of the city. The nearest store for groceries is one of the Hagkaup chain of supermarkets which is located about 2 to 3 minutes drive away and although not a large shop has all the essentials, it's open 24 hours - note there is also a fine ice cream shop adjacent to it, the owner will supply directions for you and the route is also good for continuing on into Reykjavik. One thing to note is that the sale of alcohol in Iceland is only available through state run shops called Vinbodin and so Hagkaup has only a very small selection of light beer and no wine. This didn't bother us and we didn't seek any of these shops locally although we did see one in Reykjavik. The apartment is a very short stroll to the sea and it was nice to go for a walk at midnight down to the shore. Note the shore, like most of Iceland is volcanic rock but this area has numerous pathways and it was peaceful. It was great to be out in daylight at that time - we are from Scotland and are used to long days but nothing like Iceland where it seems to just get a wee but dusky. Back to the apartment - the lounge/dining/kitchen area is a good size with a very well equipped kitchen. The apartment is warm and very comfortable. The bathroom is an excellent size with a very good, powerful, hot shower. The bed is very comfortable too. I have no hesitation in recommending this apartment to anyone. I think a car is a necessity however. I don't know what the bus service is like into the city but I'm sure the owner would advise. The owner, Maria Bjork, is very helpful and obviously takes great care to keep the accommodation to a very high standard. Reykjavik itself is a lovely city with a good human scale and delightful mix of old and new architecture. There are numerous museums and lots of lovely shops with expensive goods to sell. Whale watching is a must and we sighted Minke whale which was very exciting. I recommend the Seabaron restaurant which is a small scruffy eatery with excellent lobster soup and fish kebabs. We also did the usual touristy things like visit the hot springs etc and they are all worth it. If you are a bird watcher which we are, you are in for a treat so make sure you take binoculars with you. One thing to watch with car hire is that there are areas where it is forbidden to take the car and in fact any 2wd may not be allowed. This is due to the rough gravel tracks in the interior of Iceland. One point to note is that the interior roads are closed until late June and are not open until mid July - so if that is where you want to go plan your trip accordingly. A visit to the blue lagoon was interesting although very expensive - Reykjavik has several geothermal pools and one geothermally heated beach area which is free I think so perhaps consider those before going to the blue lagoon. We enjoyed Iceland immensely and will be back sometime.
