The Crete region
Crete – the most southern island in Europe has “everything”! Its variety of features includes traditional villages, modern cities, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bars & night-life. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and crystal clear waters. Bathed in clear sunlight 300 days of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island of Greece, it's understandably the most popular travel and vacation destination. Greeks prefer it, Europeans prefer it and generally people from all over the world want to visit Crete, if they haven't already. Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes and the other Greek islands are also beautiful, but Crete is the biggest and has a unique culture, which gives a great advantage to its popularity.
Rethymno / Loutra area
The town of Rethymno is overflowing with history and amazing Venetian and Turkish architecture. It is built around the charming old harbour with the fishing boats are arriving with the days catch. The new harbour and marina next to it, connects the town with the mainland of Greece. This traditional town is packed with atmosphere, the third largest in Crete, where narrow, alleyways and beautiful old houses mix with modern life. Rethymnon prefecture is situated perfectly in the middle of Crete, between the prefectures of Heraklio and Chania, which make it an ideal base from which to explore the island. The easy access to the National Highway makes moving around the island a smooth process.
The village of Platanias is situated on the old National Road 5 km from Rethymnon, going in the direction of Heraklio. There we turn right at the crossroads to Arkadi. After a few kilometres we come to Adele, the home of Kostis Giamboudakis, the hero of the Arkadi holocaust. The village of Adele is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Arkadi. 1 km from Adele the village of Pigi is found. As soon as you have passed Pigi, turn right towards the village of Aghios Dimitrios, where you will find the Byzantine church of the same name. After this brief detour you return to the road leading to Arkadi and at the 18th kilometre you arrive at the village of Amnatos, the home of Hariklia Daskalaki, the heroine of the Arkadi holocaust. This village boasts a beautiful view, Venetian buildings and a distinctive doorframe with an inscription. At a short distance from the village of Amnatos you will arrive at the crossroads to the settlement of Kapsaliana, which is also worth visiting.
The Museum of the Olive tree at Kapsaliana
This traditional settlement, which formerly housed the olive press for the Arkadi Monastery, has recently been restored. The Museum of the Olive tree will soon be inaugurated in the village. After having returned to our initial route, and having covered a total distance of 22 km from Rethymno, we finally arrive at the historical monastery. From there we continue in the direction of Eleftherna, which is situated 7 km from Arkadi and soon after that we arrive at Ancient Eleftherna. The village of Margarites is found 6 km after Ancient Eleftherna, where the traditional art of pottery is still flourishing. Apart from its beautiful panoramic view this village also boasts Venetian buildings with magnificent door frames, the Byzantine Churches of Aghios Ioannis the Theologos (14th century with frescoes), of Aghios Georgios (14th century) as well as the bust of the abbot Gabriel Marinakis, who was born in this village and played a leading role in the Arkadi tragedy. From the village of Margarites we return to Rethymno passing through the village of Alexandrou Hani.
