The Crete region
Crete – the most southern island in Europe has “everything”! Its variety of features includes traditional villages, modern cities, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bars & nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and crystal clear waters. Bathed in clear sunlight 300 days of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island of Greece, it's understandably the most popular travel and vacation destination. Greeks prefer it, Europeans prefer it and generally people from all over the world want to visit Crete, if they haven't already. Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes and the other Greek islands are also beautiful, but Crete is the biggest and has a unique culture, which gives a great advantage to its popularity.
Crete also has a magic radiance – truly! There is the supreme quality of the light here, the sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants & flowers that are unique to the island. Breathe in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the world’s olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses. Enjoy the delight of sipping a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village watching the daily life passing by or the excitement of a wedding and occasions, making friends with the local people or some of the world-sourced visitors. Crete is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise. The island of King Minos and a civilization that left its mark on the world map, faced the voracious appetite of conquerors from mainland Greece, Rome, Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire, the Venetians, was raided by pirates and invaded by armies who cruised the Mediterranean in search of riches and power- the proof of this in every corner of the island.
Crete has a people well known for their hospitality and tradition of welcoming visitors and foreigners. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local.
Because Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateau. The island have 3 cities of a notable size but also many smaller places, provide a sense that tourism has not got here yet – but you have! There are truly individual and unique places – any mood, any pace, any style or setting exists here. There are walks, climbs, drives and rides that take you through stunning gorges, over dramatic mountain and across amazing landscapes.
We can tell you about all the special places, trips you can take, places you can stay or visit that provide those “Moments”- which will make you want to return and be a part of it.
Rethymno / Pigi area
The town of Rethymno is overflowing with history and amazing Venetian and Turkish architecture. It is built around the charming old harbour with the fishing boats are arriving with the days catch. The new harbour and marina next to it, connects the town with the mainland of Greece. This traditional town is packed with atmosphere, the third largest in Crete, where narrow, alleyways and beautiful old houses mix with modern life. Rethymnon prefecture is situated perfectly in the middle of Crete, between the prefectures of Heraklio and Chania, which make it an ideal base from which to explore the island. The easy access to the National Highway makes moving around the island a smooth process.
The village of Pigi can be found 9 km east of the town of Rethymno on the road leading to Arkadi Monastery. It is 2 km inland from the coast. The village sits in the middle of a very flat and fertile region and used to be called Ario in olden times. Set in an area of 6,000 acres, Pigi is bordered on either side by a river with a third one dividing the village in two. This is called “O Potamos” by the locals and has always played an important part in the history of the village. Many wells could also be found here supplying excellent drinking water. The fact that there are some 60,000 olive trees in and around the village shows the rich and fertile nature of the land.
How to get there
