Home description
Just 12 kms form the town of Rethymnon and set amid rolling countryside and vast expanses of olive groves you will find the village of Pigi. In the centre of the the village Domisi has two villas available for rental. Both of the villas have their own unique atmosphere and have played a leading role in the history and culture of the village.
Villa “Arxontikos tis Ioannas” is a stone built villa dating from 1870 and consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room and kitchen. An open fireplace and a number of other personal touches give this house that feeling of “something extra”. There is a delightful view from the roof terrace across the village and to the countryside beyond. Situated in the garden are two Jacuzzis, the perfect way to laze away the long, warm summer evenings. The villa can accommodate up to six persons.
Time spent in these villas will give you the perfect opportunity to experience the true Cretan lifestyle. Pigi is a traditional working village where the inhabitants go about their daily business in the same way as they did many years ago. The village has two traditional bakeries, two mini-markets, two tavernas both serving local cusine and a pharmacy. In fact everything you need to make your time spent there truly memorable. Those who have experienced the friendliness and warm welcome given by the local people know that it is a place that you would like to return to again and again.
HISTORY OF THE HOUSE
The house can trace its existence to before the 1870 when it was the village’s kafenion. Stilianos Tripodianakis, who was born in 1878 and raised in the village, inherited the building form his father and turned it into a house for himself and his family. Stilianos, or “Stelianakis”, as everybody in the village knew him as, was earning his living from the fields, as most of the villagers. But even though he was a simple farmer, he got called “The Nobleman from Boulismenis*” a name bestowed upon him for the friendliness and the help he offered to all the villagers. The children of the village were particularly fond of him. * The old village of Pigi where earlier located elsewhere, a big earthquake destroyed the place which got the name: Boulimeni (The verb: Bouliazw = to sink) – the village which sank
Stelianakis and his family of five children Leonida (named after his father), Emmanuel, Eleni, Maria and the youngest daughter Ioanna lived together in the stone section of the house which consisted of just 2 rooms , a kitchen, storage room and a stable. A lot of time was spent outside in the big garden and on the streets of the village. Most families around the Tripodianakis family consisted of 5-8 children and the particular area of Pigi got the name: the neighborhood of joy.
During the Second World War the house, together with other residents in Pigi, was used as a “care centre” for the Greeks and the Germans, who had been wounded in battle. Because of this kind act, the Germans spared the village and its villagers. The daughters of the family; Maria and Ioanna did voluntary work as nurses during this time.
“Stelianakis” died in 1969 and the children were grown ups and moving away, some got married, others went away to work. Only little Ioanna remained and she was the one inherited the house. She lived in the house for the rest of her life, earning her living as the village seamstress.
Ioanna never married and got children of her own, but she adored looking after the children of her sister Eleni (Maria died in early age) and cared for them as if they were her own. Every summer the two grown up children, with their families, would come to spend their holiday in Crete. There was not enough room for them all so Ioanna would move out!
Sadly Ioanna passed away in 1996 and left the house to her nieces and nephews.

The Crete region
Crete – the most southern island in Europe has “everything”! Its variety of features includes traditional villages, modern cities, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bars & nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and crystal clear waters. Bathed in clear sunlight 300 days of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island of Greece, it's understandably the most popular travel and vacation destination. Greeks prefer it, Europeans prefer it and generally people from all over the world want to visit Crete, if they haven't already. Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes and the other Greek islands are also beautiful, but Crete is the biggest and has a unique culture, which gives a great advantage to its popularity.
Crete also has a magic radiance – truly! There is the supreme quality of the light here, the sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants & flowers that are unique to the island. Breathe in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the world’s olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses. Enjoy the delight of sipping a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village watching the daily life passing by or the excitement of a wedding and occasions, making friends with the local people or some of the world-sourced visitors. Crete is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise. The island of King Minos and a civilization that left its mark on the world map, faced the voracious appetite of conquerors from mainland Greece, Rome, Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire, the Venetians, was raided by pirates and invaded by armies who cruised the Mediterranean in search of riches and power- the proof of this in every corner of the island.
Crete has a people well known for their hospitality and tradition of welcoming visitors and foreigners. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local.
Because Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateau. The island have 3 cities of a notable size but also many smaller places, provide a sense that tourism has not got here yet – but you have! There are truly individual and unique places – any mood, any pace, any style or setting exists here. There are walks, climbs, drives and rides that take you through stunning gorges, over dramatic mountain and across amazing landscapes.
We can tell you about all the special places, trips you can take, places you can stay or visit that provide those “Moments”- which will make you want to return and be a part of it.
Rethymno / Pigi area
The town of Rethymno is overflowing with history and amazing Venetian and Turkish architecture. It is built around the charming old harbour with the fishing boats are arriving with the days catch. The new harbour and marina next to it, connects the town with the mainland of Greece. This traditional town is packed with atmosphere, the third largest in Crete, where narrow, alleyways and beautiful old houses mix with modern life. Rethymnon prefecture is situated perfectly in the middle of Crete, between the prefectures of Heraklio and Chania, which make it an ideal base from which to explore the island. The easy access to the National Highway makes moving around the island a smooth process.
The village of Pigi can be found 9 km east of the town of Rethymno on the road leading to Arkadi Monastery. It is 2 km inland from the coast. The village sits in the middle of a very flat and fertile region and used to be called Ario in olden times. Set in an area of 6,000 acres, Pigi is bordered on either side by a river with a third one dividing the village in two. This is called “O Potamos” by the locals and has always played an important part in the history of the village. Many wells could also be found here supplying excellent drinking water. The fact that there are some 60,000 olive trees in and around the village shows the rich and fertile nature of the land.
How to get there
You can travel to Crete by plane, landing in one of the islands international airports; Heraklio or Chania. A lot of charter companies have directly flight from all main airports in Europe in the summer time. Outside the season, most of the big travel companies can arrange flights through Athens.
