The Crete region
A lot can be said about Crete! Fantastic Mediterranean weather, glorious sunshine, breathtaking sceneries, world famous antiquities, friendly people and delicious food - the most complete package you could wish for...
And a bit of history: The painter El Greco was born and studied in the area, and has several pieces of his work on display in the Cretan Historical Museum in Iraklion. Writer Nikos Kazantzakis, of Zorba The Greek fame, who was a Cretan is buried in Iraklion. And Iraklion's suburb of Knossos boasts a backstory like few others: it was once the Minoan capital, when it served as the basis for the minotaur-cursed labyrinth of legend. (An excavation of the palace of King Minos remains one of the Knossos’s major attractions.) It is thought that the Minoan civilisation was destroyed by a tsunami created from the sinking of the continent of Atlantis, remains of which form the island of Santorini today.
Rethymno / Bali Resort area
The name Bali has nothing to do with the tropical place in Indonesia except the unique beauty of both places. Bali is a gorgeous small village which surrounds an excellent sandy and pebble beach that are right in the centre of the village. There are several excellent seafood restaurants as well as a few tavernas and cafes in the centre of the village. the Monastery of Agios (Saint) Ioannis is located near Bali, with lovely frescoes in the church of the Monastery and a serene garden in the courtyard. More beaches with crystal and clean waters are dispersed on the coves near the village. Diving, sailing, canoe, and water-sports are possible and worth trying.
How to get there
Heraklion airport and port is approx. 45 km and Hania airport and port is about 70 km away, therefore, the resort is easily accessible. Several airlines, are visiting both airports with direct flights from several european capitals. Budget airlines, such as Easyjet, are flying to Crete Heraklion airport from Berlin, Manchester and London Gatwick airports. Ferries that mainly sail from Pireaus are servicing ports in Crete daily.
The new motorway from Heraklion to Rethymnon passes 3 km away from the village so although it is easily accessible, the village has not lost its isolated charm and remains a glorious spot. Rethymnon town is 30 km away.
