Villa Panagia Location:

The village of Akoumia is 39km south of Rethimnon on the Rethimnon - Spili - Akoumia - Agia Galini road. It's only a small village along an interesting road, and in the valley below in between the olive trees and the green bushes there is a striking and pretty church. In Akoumia you will find the road to the delightful beach of Triopetra.

Akoumia is an authentic Cretan village and the people here are really friendly. In the main square with its terraces you find the large church behind an almost even bigger tree. Nearby is the minimarket of the village. The very good bakery is in the beginning, at the turn where you exit the main road to go to the village. More tavernes can be found in other parts of the village.

Triopetra consists mainly of two beaches, which are separated by a small peninsula. At the edge of the peninsula, in the sea, three majestic rocks rise. Triopetra is named after these rocks, since it means “Three Rocks”.

The first beach, known as Small Triopetra (or Koumado), is located in a closed sandy and rocky bay, south of the three rocks. In its southern edges Akoumianos River empties, which separates it from the magical beach of St. Paul Sandhills. On the beach there are a few rooms and taverns, and umbrellas are offered. Here is the small harbor of the area, in the southeast part of the beach, called Stomio. 1km northeast of this beach, you can visit the amazing chapel of Prophet Elias, on a high hill, overlooking Triopetra area.

The main beach of Triopetra, West Triopetra (or Chatzi), is formed west of the rocks and extends to the west for several kilometers. The beach has beautiful coarse sand and beautiful water colors. Its west-orientation makes it vulnerable to the western winds, but also famous for its fantastic sunsets. The east part of the beach is organized with taverns, rooms and umbrellas, but never seems crowded. There is a small river, with fresh water all year round. Camping is not allowed on the beach, but there is a stunning big cave with shape ? near the three rocks, where you can find shade. The west part of Triopetra is not organised. There is a dirt road that runs along the beach and heads to the next beach, called Ligres.

The Crete region

Holidaying in Crete and renting a Crete villa or apartment are a great and unique way to see the largest and most southern of the Greek islands. The island has an enormous wealth of myths, legends and historical sites. There is also incredibly natural beauty on the island, with the stunning mountain ranges running from one end all the way to the other, breaking only for the fertile plateaus of Lasithi, Omalos and Nidha. The landscape is also dotted with caves and gorges, like the famous Gorge of Samaria, the home of the kri-kri, which can now only be found on Crete.
