The Rethymnon Prefecture region
According to archaeological discoveries, man first arrived in the area in the later Neolithic years (3500-2800 BC). Until now, 13 instances of human presence in this period have been found, 5 of which are in caves. The most well known is the Gerani cave which was periodically a fishermen's settlement.
Human activity spread throughout the whole province during the Minoan period (2800 - 1100 BC). Settlements and large building complexes (Elenes, Monastiraki, Apodoulou) appeared which later flattened in the earthquake of 1450 BC. This destruction was taken advantage of by the Mycenaeans who invaded and settled in Crete.
During the Geometric Period (710-270 BC) there is evidence of civilisation in the area of Eleftherna and its eastern areas including at least IS cities founded between 710 and 470 BC, the majority of which are small towns. Of these, Axos enjoyed particular prosperity.
During the classical years (470-323 BC) Sivritos boomed as did Rithymna, the predecessor of today's Rethymnon.
During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, Lappa appears as the most important city. The 5th, 6th and first half of the 7th centuries AD were peaceful under the jurisdiction of the Byzantine Empire. Since the second half of the 7th century continuous Arab invasions disrupted Crete until it was finally conquered in 827 or 828. The successive attempts of the Byzantine resulted in its re conquest only one and a half century later (961 AD).
In 1204 Crete came under Venetian rule, a period of domination which lasted until 1669, the last centuries of which are characterised as the "Kingdom of Crete" and left a legacy of many important monuments on the island.
The Turkish occupation brought with it a dark period for Rethymnon. The economy became agricultural, education ceased for a few centuries and oppression became unbearable. The Revolution at Sfakia in 1770 prepared for the uprising of 1821, which in turn re-ignited in 1866. It was in this revolution that the Arkadi Monastery near Rethymnon became world famous after the martyrdom of its defenders.
Crete was eventually unified with the rest of Greece in 1913 and since then it has followed the nation's history. In May 1941, Rethymnon was one of the German Parachutists' three fronts. The memorable resistance of the local people led to the execution of hundreds of inhabitants and the levelling of whole villages.
The development of tourism in the last 20 years has given employment opportunities to the people of Rethymnon and has stemmed the emigration to urban centres, which had devastated the settlements of the province.
The island of Zeus offers endless possibilities. From palm beaches up to 2,000 m high mountain peaks, a world renowned ancient civilization and a famous traditional cuisine. 7,000 adventurous years of history.
It is the largest Greek Island and is separated into 4 prefectures: Chania (Hania), Rethymnon (Rethymno)
Rethymno, Crete, Greece
The prefecture of Rethymno Greece, one of the four of the Greek Island of Crete, lies between the prefecture of Chania and the one of Heraklion. It is full of magnificent beaches, interesting archaeological sites and Byzantine churches, lovely villages, lively resorts and its capital, the town of Rethymno, is a very attractive city which has kept many example of the sumptuous Venetian architecture. The plethora of charms and beauties astonishes every visitor.

"Perfect Hosts - couldn't wish for a better holiday home"
Alki (owner) met us in the middle of the night in a lightning storm to guide as to our apartment. We were a little late arriving in our hire car and he was extremely helpful and pleased to see us. This set the tone for the perfect hospitality we received during our stay. We cannot recommend this holiday apartment enough. Everything was perfect and I cannot fault a single thing.
The property is in an ideal location in Rethymno right in the middle of the seafront with beautiful private sun terraces to the front and rear. All amenities and facilities are first class and the place was much roomier than it looked in the photos.
Best of all the host family were extrememly kind and friendly without being at-all intrusive during our stay... expertly judged. Our hosts were always ready to help (although we never had to ask) and so helpful in providing a little helpful starter information to guide us around the town and island.
Highly recommended. A+++. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone and would be happy to stay there again. Thankyou Alki and family for a wonderful platform for our holiday - it would not have been half the holiday we experienced without you.

"Spacious apartment in excellent location"
Great to be able to easily walk into the Old Town to find one of the lovely little restaurants or bars, or just relax on your own balcony and watch the world go by. Owner's family couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. Thanks for a lovely stay!

"Excellent centrally sited apartment"
We flew into Heraklion and after hiring a car there drove to Rethymno. Alki was there to meet and greet us. In addition to showing us how everything worked he also gave very good advice on where to park - and not park - the car. The apartment was excellent and met our needs spot on. It was very central to both the old town in one direction and the main beach in the other. (There is also a smaller beach directly opposite).
Alki was always readily available if we had any queries or wanted advice. He regularly stayed in the apartment below and his Mum and Dad also stayed over from time to time. They were very friendly and made us some delicious Greek food. We had a really enjoyable holiday.

"We loved it."
Great place to stay. Really central but quiet too. Loved the view from the balcony, the fact that we could walk to an amazing selection of restaurants and shops and just pop across to the harbour for a quick swim. We hired a car locally and went sighseeing in the morning and to the beach on the south coast most afternoons. We were really well looked after and felt we got a tiny taste of Cretan life. Thank you.
We are glad that the apartment was everything you expected. Thank you for choosing our Venidzelou apartment to spend your holiday...regards from sunny and happy Rethymno - Crete.

"Rethymnon is a beautiful place to stay!"
This was our first visit to Crete and the apartment in Rethymnon was the perfect place to stay.
There is plenty to do within walking distance, lots of fantastic places to eat and the old town area is very interesting and attractive.
There is an open top bus and road train to visit inland villages, monasteries and other beaches so this is a good way to see more of the island. There is so much to see and it is a very beautiful place.
We didn't hire a car although might consider this for a future visit to explore the island independently.
The Rethymnon beaches weren't too crowded, even in July. The harbour beach is right opposite the apartment and was a great place to swim at sunrise. There is a well organised beach with sun umbrellas and facilities just a short walk away.
The owners of the apartment are charming and couldn't have made us feel more welcome, it was so much more homely than staying in a big hotel.
The main street outside the apartment with restaurants and shops and is closed to traffic in the evenings, it had a lively feel but wasn't too hectic or noisy, everything was quiet by around midnight.
We had a really fantastic time, a good balance of beach holiday with plenty other things to do. We would definitely go back - maybe when it isn't quite as hot!
I am glad you had a fantastic time in our apartment but how could you not...sunrise swims sound amazing.BRAVO!
You guys where wonderful guests please give my regards to your wonderful son, i loved the positive review he wrote in our guest book.

"perfect location, very helpful owner"
This was our first visit visit to Crete and it will not be our last, we shall return to the apartment Venizelou without doubt. From the first contact this was a good experience the owner was very quick to respond and was most helpful, The apartment although not luxury was spacious and well equiped the lack of a full cooker was not a problem I cookied a full English breakfsat every morning, the best bit was to then eat it on the large terrace overlooking the beautiful blue sea .Everything is close by the people really friendly very safe I can highly recommend this for a holiday. The two flights of stairs may be a problem for some less agile but for most no problem.
Thank you for highly recommending our place next time try our full Cretan breakfast, you will love it too. You where wonderful guests...now friends, Efxaristo (Thank you)!

Loved our first visit to a Greek island. Such a warm welcome from the owner. Loved Rethymnon and the excellent apartment is 5 minutes walk from everywhere, main beach, old town, and the shops the locals use. No need for car hire, plenty of excursions and buses. Got home and our TV looks really small!
Happy to see your STAY was enjoyed to the full! It was our pleasure having you and we are looking forward to your next visit.
From Sunny Rethymno - Venizelou with love.

"Great location, but not fully air-conditioned"
Good apartment at the heart of the Old Town of Rethymno at the second (last) floor of the authentic house. Close to the beach, shops and sign-seen. Spread apartment with large balcony. Friendly owners.
The main problem - air-condition only at bedroom, so temperature at kitchen and dining room are high.
Thank you for your feedback, we are really glad you loved your stay in our apartment.
We have now installed an additional air-conditioner in the kitchen and lounge area. Our beautiful rental (Venizelou) apartment in Rethymno, is now FULLY AIR-CONDITIONED.
