The Crete region
Welcome to Rethymno, Crete! The beautiful city of Rethymno is standing on the site where ancient Rithymna used to be, as archaeological excavations of the late Neolithic period (3500- 2800 BC) proved. It is the gate way between Chania and Heraklion. Full of rich history, ancient sites, magnificent sandy beaches, Byzantine churches, lovely villages & lively resorts.
Rethymno combines an old- time aristocratic appearance with a modern aspect, a blend which is creating a unique atmosphere.
Various elements are participating to the charm of this attractive town such as the many arched doorways and stone staircases, 16th century buildings, Byzantine, Hellenic and Roman remains, narrow stone-paved streets, the small Venetian harbour and the superb huge municipal gardens, ideal for peacefulness and tranquility.
FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS IN RETHYMNON:The Renaissance Festival is the culmination of the city's cultural festivals. The festival plays host during its three weeks to a variety of theatrical, musical and cinematic events as well as dance and multi-media spectacles. The Cretan wine festival Already over 35 years old, this celebration in the public park lasts three weeks in the heart of summer and attracts thousands of visitors. The Rethymnon Carnival held at the start of Lent every year, has been revived in recent years and it can be regarded one of the best and biggest in Greece. The feast of Klidonas, a historic celebration every June which maintains an interesting custom of burning the flower wreaths which were made on first of May. The fishermen's festival Celebratory festival in the Venetian Harbour, with free fish and wine on offer. Rich FLORA AND FAUNA as the climate and geomorphy of Rethymnon, and Crete generally, allow the existence of a large number of species, many of which are endemic to the island. As a result, the visitor may find natural treasures that have existed on the island for centuries and were depicted in Minoan frescoes such as the sea lily, sea turtles "caretta caretta" which lay their eggs on the beaches and may even see the Eleanora's falcon which migrates from Africa in the summer months. In the valleys, the visitor will come across, beautiful Fauna and Flora unique to Crete, dozens of varieties of wild flowers. The quick-eyed visitor may also spot hares, skunks, martens, hedgehogs, bats and many types of birds. In the semi-mountainous areas many birds of prey soar the blue skies. In the mountains amongst other varieties are the Cretan maple (acer sempervirens), the Cretan tulip (tulipa cretica), the yellow violet (erysimum raulini) etc. This is also the most important habitat for birds of prey as well as the Cretan wild goat and the thorn mouse (Amocos minus). In the wetlands of Geropotamos and Preveli, the visitor will encounter interesting fauna and flora, especially the latter, which includes the Cretan Palm tree (phoenix theophrastii). Lastly, in the gorges visitors can come across the famous Cretan dittany and other fragrant plants of Crete. Rethymno is a haven for walks, cyclists or just site seeing!!!
The town offers all the touristy facilities needed as well as lively bars and clubs and various restaurants and excellent taverns.
Rethymno has regular bus services to the main towns and villages of the entire prefecture.
Chromonastiri is a local community of the Rethymno Municipality, located 11 km southeast of Rethymno, east of the Mount Vrisinas at an altitude of 360 meters. The traditional settlement, of great cultural value, with Venetian architectural elements scattered throughout the village. In the years 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Chromonastiri received an award of the '"cleanest and organized traditional community"'
The name means “Color and Monastery”, and probably this name comes by the coexistence of the village and the monastery of Panayía Kerá (back to the Second Byzantine and Venetian period). Built around the 12th-13th centuries and has been characterized as a traditional village, as several buildings were built during the Venetian period. The local community of Chromonastiri consists of four settlements: Chromonastiri, Prinedes, Kapediana and Myli, Rethymno .
The Church of Panayía Kerá is a painted Byzantine church of cruciform shape with a dome, dating from the 11th century, with frescoes of 14th century.
The Church of Ayios Eftychios,
Another important Byzantine church of the 11th century - that of Ayios Eftychios - is situated outside Chromonastiri at the area called Perdíki Metóhi, again with amazing frescoes of the 11th century (amazing are the huge eyes of the saints and especially of Christ)
The Parish Church of this settlement is St. George Church.
Villa Clodio: Buildings with Venetian architectural elements are scattered in the village, but the most important building is the so-called Villa Clodio, which used to be the summer residence of Venetian nobles from Rethymno and in the Ottoman period it was a house of an Ottoman dignitary (konak). It is a magnificent mansion which has been restored and houses the Military Museum. The Military Museum houses many exhibits - military uniforms, weapons of various ages, decorations, etc.
The oil mill of Prinari: The old factory (oil mill) of Prinari, fully renovated, with all its old equipment, located in the settlement, welcomes visitors to its cultural learning centre for an experience to learn all things relating to the olive and its milling process.
