The Crete region

Welcome to Rethymno, Crete! The beautiful city of Rethymno is standing on the site where ancient Rithymna used to be, as archaeological excavations of the late Neolithic period (3500- 2800 BC) proved. It is the gate way between Chania and Heraklion. Full of rich history, ancient sites, magnificent sandy beaches, Byzantine churches, lovely villages & lively resorts.

Rethymno combines an old- time aristocratic appearance with a modern aspect, a blend which is creating a unique atmosphere.

Various elements are participating to the charm of this attractive town such as the many arched doorways and stone staircases, 16th century buildings, Byzantine, Hellenic and Roman remains, narrow stone-paved streets, the small Venetian harbour and the superb huge municipal gardens, ideal for peacefulness and tranquility.

FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS IN RETHYMNON:The Renaissance Festival is the culmination of the city's cultural festivals. The festival plays host during its three weeks to a variety of theatrical, musical and cinematic events as well as dance and multi-media spectacles. The Cretan wine festival Already over 35 years old, this celebration in the public park lasts three weeks in the heart of summer and attracts thousands of visitors. The Rethymnon Carnival held at the start of Lent every year, has been revived in recent years and it can be regarded one of the best and biggest in Greece. The feast of Klidonas, a historic celebration every June which maintains an interesting custom of burning the flower wreaths which were made on first of May. The fishermen's festival Celebratory festival in the Venetian Harbour, with free fish and wine on offer. Rich FLORA AND FAUNA as the climate and geomorphy of Rethymnon, and Crete generally, allow the existence of a large number of species, many of which are endemic to the island. As a result, the visitor may find natural treasures that have existed on the island for centuries and were depicted in Minoan frescoes such as the sea lily, sea turtles "caretta caretta" which lay their eggs on the beaches and may even see the Eleanora's falcon which migrates from Africa in the summer months. In the valleys, the visitor will come across, beautiful Fauna and Flora unique to Crete, dozens of varieties of wild flowers. The quick-eyed visitor may also spot hares, skunks, martens, hedgehogs, bats and many types of birds. In the semi-mountainous areas many birds of prey soar the blue skies. In the mountains amongst other varieties are the Cretan maple (acer sempervirens), the Cretan tulip (tulipa cretica), the yellow violet (erysimum raulini) etc. This is also the most important habitat for birds of prey as well as the Cretan wild goat and the thorn mouse (Amocos minus). In the wetlands of Geropotamos and Preveli, the visitor will encounter interesting fauna and flora, especially the latter, which includes the Cretan Palm tree (phoenix theophrastii). Lastly, in the gorges visitors can come across the famous Cretan dittany and other fragrant plants of Crete. Rethymno is a haven for walks, cyclists or just site seeing!!!

The town offers all the touristy facilities needed as well as lively bars and clubs and various restaurants and excellent taverns.

Rethymno has regular bus services to the main towns and villages of the entire prefecture.

Rethymno

Also popular bars offer the best in atmosphere & drinks.

Leisure facilities nearby include a tennis and basketball court, gym, sauna, billards, volleyball, massage and hairdressing. A wide choice of walking paths, boat trips and excursions to many interesting sights are readily available.

Please be aware that not all facilities are complimentary and are available within the small village of Panormo.

The Venetian harbour

From 1300, Rethymno's harbour was constantly being changed and re-built to make it safer and hold more boats. Due to the prevailing currents along the coast, this was never entirely successful. It retains its picturesque character even today.

The Loggia

The most characteristic Renaissance monument of Rethymnon and the most important architectural reminder of the Venetian occupation.

The Rimondi Fountain

Rebuilt in 1626 on the foundation of the earlier one, the new fountain is architecturally and sculptural ornate.

Saint Franciscus Church (Catholic)

The monastery of the Franciscan order. It sports a single sloped wooden roofed basilica with an impressively decorated entrance.

The Neratzies, the Kara Mousa, the Great Door, and the Veli Pasa mosque.

The five remaining mosques are a reminder of the years of the Turkish occupation. Of these, the first is the only one that can be visited, which is used today as a music conservatory.

The Prefecture Building (Nomarchia)

Built after 1869 is a commemorative building in neo-classic design.

The Old Town

Has been preserved in good condition with the public and private monuments of the Venetian, Turkish and later periods.

The sandy beach, and the nearest mini-market, tavernas and small shops can be found in Stavromenos, approximately 2 km away. The village of Perama with a wide variety of tavernas, shops, post office, and a bank, will be found at a distance of 10 km.

Interesting outings can be made to the traditional pottery village of Margarites, the ruins of old Eleftherna, and the famous monastery of Arkadi. A car is essential.

"Excellent Holiday Appartment"

We stayed at Panorama Seafront Homes apartment 10. The Apartment was immaculate with everything listed. It was modern and well finished with air conditioning throughout with electric shutters which meant it was incredibly easy to sleep. The pool was fantastic enjoyed by us and our 3 children aged 9 - 13 and a sea view from the balcony. The apartment is ideally situated with only a short walk to 2 beaches which were lovely and not over crowded with sunbeds and umbrellas to rent for 7 euros for 2. The village was only a short walk and there was a lovely traditional feel. Great little places to eat we enjoyed Kastro Taverna and down the little village street a lovely place opposite the bakery but all offered good quality Greek food which was well priced. The bakery offered lovely fresh breads and pastries. Also towards the main road there were produce stalls selling locally grown tomatoes, melons and much more very cheap and delicious. There is a cash point outside the bakery and a post office across the way. We hired a car with best car rentals before flying and were met at the airport - all very straight forward and dropped off at the airport on our return. Best car rentals operate in the village of Panorama. We found the car great and were able to explore the island but everything you need is in the village and there is also a bus service. This was a great place to stay, traditional with everything you need close by. A fantastic apartment and a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

Thank you for the fantastic review. This is what our clients love about our apartment and its close proximity to everything. Everything is within walking distance for family, big and small. Guests have also commented that the village reminds them of what Crete was like 30 years ago. The village is really stunning and traditional. Take care and visit us soon.
