By far the largest of the Greek Islands. Crete is the most southerly Greek Isle and as a sun, sea and sand destination it is hard to beat, with fine beautiful sandy beaches scattered throughout the island. If its history you like, then Crete is full of world class archeological sites. Don't miss an excursion to the Samaria Gorge with its fantastic scenery. Rethymnon This resort is dominated by its venetian fortress and sleepy fishing harbour. An endless stretch of sand and shingle beach, great shopping and numerous restaurants, bars and tavernas. Agios Nikolaos Was once built by the Venetians around an allegedly bottomless lake, it is now a cosmopolitan town with a small pebble beach. The resort has developed into one of Crete's most popular destinations. Most of the activity is focussed around the harbour where tourists and locals alike enjoy the atmosphere. Elounda The resort of Elounda with its back drop of mountains is situated around its small harbour with an array of good fish restaurants, shops and a man made beach. Platanias This resort, 6 miles west of Chania, has developed over the years into quite a lively resort. It boasts a good choice of shops, cafes and trendy bars and good quality restaurants. The beach is also lovely here with a good choice of watersports on offer. Bali This resort has lovely bays which surround the fabulous mountain scenery. Good choice of Restaurants, few cafes to sit and watch the world go by. A small selection of shops, supermarkets and souvenir shops. The Rethymno / Melidoni area
There are some interesting excursions you can go in Kastri, Melidoni and the outskirts. The distances and routes are shown on the map. We suggest some of these: * Melidodi Cave, a historical and geophysical site * Panormo. A cosmopolitan seaside village with neoclassical buildings and the air of nobility. * Bali. A picturesque fishing village built by the sea. * Moni Attalis in Bali. St John’s monastery with splendid view and architecture. * Margarites. A beautiful village, famous for its ceramics. * Ancient Eleftherna. One of the most important local archeological sites, still under excavation, with important findings. Ancient graves, mosaic floors, underground cisterns and other treasures have been found. * Sfedoni Cave, in Zoniana. A beautiful, well preserved cave. * Anogia. One of the most beautiful and important mountain villages, with tradition in weaving, healthy Cretan products and … fresh air. * Nida. It is situated above Anogia. You can see the cave in which Zeus was born, according to Greek mythology. * Moni Arkadiou. A historic monastery. * Moni Vossakou. (monastery) * Rethymno You can also attend many cultural events and evenings of traditional Cretan music. For those who enjoy mountain hiking and trekking, the area is ideal. We loved staying at this fabulous villa in Melidoni. The house was beautiful and had everything we could have wanted. My only complaint about the house was that the windows weren't covered with mosquito nets and so the kids got very badly bitten - however this wouldn't put me off returning again. The stunning garden was stocked with aubergines, courgettes, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers, lemons (there was also a pomegranate tree which sadly wasn't ripe) which we were able to pick and cook with - the kids loved this. The pool was stunning and the kids pool also had the bonus of doubling up as a jacuzzi. Antonis was fantastic, helping us to sort out the mess of our luggage not showing up on arrival. Nothing was too much trouble. He was a perfect mix of being there if you needed him - but not around too much. We really had the most amazing holiday, and hope to return one day soon. |
