The Rethymnon Prefecture region
Holidaying in Crete and renting a Crete villa or apartment are a great and unique way to see the largest and most southern of the Greek islands. The island has an enormous wealth of myths, legends and historical sites. There is also incredibly natural beauty on the island, with the stunning mountain ranges running from one end all the way to the other, breaking only for the fertile plateaus of Lasithi, Omalos and Nidha. The landscape is also dotted with caves and gorges, like the famous Gorge of Samaria, the home of the kri-kri, which can now only be found on Crete.
Ancient Eleftherna is located 25 kilometres south-east of Rethymno. Since 1972 it has been classified as “scenery of particular natural beauty” and a protected archaeological place.
Within a walking distance from the village, one can explore the ruins of the ancient city Ancient Eleftherna, which was inhabited from 3000 B.C. until the 12th-13th century.
The village of Ancient Eleftherna(Prines) is only 12km from the historical Arkadi Monastery, 15 km from the sea and 4km from the ancient centre of pottery in Margarites.
Ancient Eleftherna is the most important archaeological site of Rethymno county.
According to the Greek ancient tradition the village took its name from Eleftherna, who was one of the Kourites, protectors of Zeus.
The city of Eleftherna that stood here in ancient times grew to become one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Dorian civilization (8th – 7th century BC).
The region was inhabited for at least 4500 years while the archaeological research brought to light findings dated from the times of the First-Minoan civilization up to the Byzantine era.
For this reason, visitors have the opportunity to observe the transformation of a society and the influence to its people throughout the years.
The two central points of the archeological sites in the region are Pyrgi and Nisi hills.
The archaeological findings that lie beneath these two hills are Minoan Era pottery items, coins, statuary, jewellery, tools and the ruins buildings, a castle tower, a bridge, a whole Hellenistic neighborhood. Paved Roman roads and a Byzantine church have also been found in this region.
