The Crete region

Crete enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year, has reputedly one of the healthiest diets in the world, and a very low crime rate.
Cretans are renowned for their hospitality to visitors to the largest of the Greek Islands. As well as beautiful sandy beaches, there are the backdrop of dramatic mountains. Sights to see are Knossos archeological site, the Samarian Gorge, the longest in Europe with beautiful wildflowers, and the historic towns of Chania and Rethymnon, with their Turkish and Venetian influences.
The Rethymno / Adele area
The village of Adele consists of around 400 inhabitants, amongst olive groves, rivers and gorges. A typical Cretan village it has lots of cafes, tavernas, a bakery, winding alleyways and a slow pace of life.
Nearby Agia Paraskevi (500 metres south of Adele) is a tiny village of 180 people, again typically Cretan.
The beautiful city of Rethymnon is full of atmosphere with its old Venetian fortress and harbour, maze of streets, shops selling local crafts, mosques and minarets and fascinating market. Lots of lively nightlife. There is a wine festival in July, a museum and an archeological museum. Crete's most famous monstery at Arkadhi is worth a visit. The scenery of the mountains is breathtaking.
If you hire a car, you can visit much of the island.

This area is very nice, but you DO need a car, as you are situated very high in the hills. The complex is very clean, nicely designed and the gardens are kept well. However, the apartment has very limited facilities. There is no patio furniture, internal furnishings are worn, there are no curtains for the patio doors, which look out on to the pool, so the people using the divan in the living area are completely exposed to neighbours and light. Limited bedding, and no cleaning utensils to leave the apartment in a clean state, as you would wish to. We arrived to damp bedding draped all over the apartment, and we had to sleep in this damp bedding. We did complain to the owner, who denied all of this and eventually ignored our calls and emails. A lovely area to visit for your holiday, but not this apartment! |
