"Lovely stay at Maravel Apartments - Highly Recommended"
We arrived at around 12.30am to find Polychronis waiting up for us with the keys to the apartment. He was very helpful from the point of booking, responding quickly to all emails. His house is directly opposite the apartment, keeping him on hand for emergencies, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the holiday.
The apartment was exactly as described. The modest kitchen and lounge space is open plan, leading on to a pretty balcony, with views of the nearby sea. This is literally a stone throw away from the door and we slept listening to the sounds of the waves. The view from the bedroom window is beautiful. We stayed in the one bedroom apartment which had a comfortable double bed (two singles, joined with a proper mattress connector).
The location is great, just a couple of minutes walk to the main road (Adelianos Campos) where you will find a long strip of bars, restaurants and shops to chose from on foot. Just a 10 minute drive away is the pretty town of Rethymnon, which is well worth a visit, especially the old town, with plenty of choice and things to see. Some recommendations for food include Thalassografia, which is just beneath the Fortezza and boasts beautiful views of the sea. The salmon pasta was stunning. Everything was great value and lovely service. Zizzi's was also very good for local Cretan dishes (great value also) and can be found on the old road near Adelianos Campos. Although the harbour in Rethymnon is very pretty, watch out for restaurants touting for customers. We had a bad experience at 'Palazzo', after being practically forced to sit down and then goaded in to having the fish of the day (after asking for another fish dish), we were given a rather large bill at the end and at no point were told that the fish would cost almost 30 euros! A real rip off and bit of a scam.
Anyway, back to the apartment. I would describe it as basic, if what you are looking for is a luxury hotel room but we found it to be charming and traditional. You have everything you need to cook (sharp knife was a little blunt but that's nit picking) and cleaners come in every 3 days or so to change the towels and linens. So there is no need to buy toilet rolls (we made that mistake on the second day) or bin bags, as these are also replaced. Some cleaning fluid would be handy, so guests can wipe surfaces and bathroom (as cleaners don't seem to do this). There was a good hair dryer and iron provided as well. The apartment does have a small tv but we didn't turn it on once! Must be a sign of a good holiday.
We hired a car so that we could get about and see a bit more of Crete. This is handy but not essential if you're happy to stay local. There are buses running regularly to Rethymnon from the main road by the apartment. We ventured out to Agios Pelagios beach and Bali (both on the same road that travels to the apartment from Heraklion airport) but to be honest, we preferred the beach by the apartment! Much less crowded and beautiful at sunset. The local doughnut seller is amusing too.
We were also able to use the facilities of the hotel next door (pool and bar) and this was perfect. We also had a little visitor every few days, a little ginger and white cat, who was extremely friendly. He seems to love human company and would sit for as long as possible (purring loudly) if you gave him a little attention. The only thing you will want to shoo away is the mosquitoes! Take some repellent and make use of the plug ins in the apartment. You can pick up the sachets from the local supermarket for less than 2 euros.
All in all, we had a really lovely time and were sad to leave! I would highly recommend the apartments to anyone and would very happily go again.
