Joanna Paraschakis, the owner, runs a great olive factory at Melidoni Village which is open to the public and where our guests has the opportunity to be guided, free of charge, through three different olive oil factories. At the first olive oil factory the visitors has the chance to see how olive oil was produced in the older days with manually worked tools and the help of animals. At the second olive oil factory the visitor has the chance to see how olive oil was producer with less effort, with the help of a diesel machine. The third olive oil factory which can be seen is the one we use today which uses centrifuge.

The Paraschakis Family Olive Oil Factory was founded in1991 by Manolis Paraschakis and since then our family has been making olive oil for our family and for the people in the neighbouring villages. In 2004 we opened our doors to the public so that anyone who is interested in learning all the details of olive oil, from picking to processing the olives, is welcome to visit us.

The Crete region

This is your place, Melidoni is a village near Perama, Rethymno, which lies 4 km south of the coast and still close enough to main highways to reach a wide range of destinations.

The village has a petrol station, supermarket, kiosks, small regional cafes and local restaurants where you can taste the unique cretan cuisine. A great base to discover the varied countryside and the nearby cities and beaches.

A worth visit is the nearby Melidoni Cave or Gerontospilios (2km away). Gerontospilios is very important due to the archeological findings, some of which are exhibited in the Archeological Museum of Rethymnon. Moreover, the cave has played a tragic role in the history of Cretan revolution against the Turks, in 1824.

The Bali & Panormo beaches, which are the closest are located 6 km away, while the beautiful beaches of Skaleta and of Geropotamos are 9 km away.

Margarites village which is 10 km away, the European ceramic art center, the famous monastery of Arkadi, the archeological site of ancient Eleutherna and the incomparable city of Rethymno.

Nearby vilage of Panormos has a lot to show for a village of its size and is one of the few unspoilt beach towns on the northern coast. It retains an unhurried, authentic village feel and makes for a  quiter alternative to the overcrowded scene immediately east of Rethymno and at nearby Bali. You'll find a small harbour, a couple of Byzantine chapels, a post office, a few mini markets and shops and the best of all in summer concerts and other events  are held in a carob mill turned cultural centre.

Joanna the owner, will be glad to provide you with valuable tourist information meant for individual tourism.

Rethymno

The Prefecture of Rethymno is the heart of the island of Crete and is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Rethymno awaits you with clear blue seas and Mount Psiloritis, there are traces of a civilisation that dates back 4,500 years, numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, enchanting Venetian monuments, the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece, with endless beaches, caves, gorges and unique flora and fauna.

Rethymno and its villages are live postcards, which are pervaded by the aroma of Cretan cuisine and the sound of the Cretan lyre.

People live here amidst nature and emotions, outside the code of behavior found in big cities. No matter where you go, be it even to the most isolated village, our people will open their doors to you to treat you to a "tsikoudia" and befriend you.

Rethymno is the homeland of Zeus, the god of Hospitality. The great number of visitors who return repeatedly confirms the words of the poet: ”Rethymno is not a place where you go to, but a place where you return.”

This is the Rethymno we offer you as an alternative for your holidays and we invite you to discover it.
