Home description
Set high up in the village of Agia Triada, Villa Alexandra is a holiday villa comprising self contained accommodation situated on the ground and upper floors with their own separate access and terraces complete with a swimming pool. The villa is superbly designed and extremely well equipped with bright and airy interiors, whitewashed walls and white floor tiles throughout. The 20km sandy beach is only 5km away and Rethymno town is only 7km. The final 100 meter's up to the villa is fairly steap but this is more than compensated by the stunning views from the villa.

The Crete region
Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands and is renowned for being an island of contrast: long, sandy beaches, crystal clear Mediterranean waters, rugged snow capped mountains and breathtaking scenery. It is also an island that is just waiting to be explored. There is so much history: the birthplace of Zeus, father of all the Greek Gods and the Minoan Empire where the legend of the Minotaur has its origins; the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras that all left their mark in the landscape and architecture of the island. No wonder they call it "The Magical Island of Crete!" The weather is hot and sunny from early April till the end of October but can still be warm in November and December, the only two months where the weather can be unpredictable are January and February. Samaria Gorge The longest gorge in Europe at 18 kms is very well known for its incredible beauty. Knossos Palace Approximately 5 km south east of Heraklion is Knossos, the capital of the Minoan culture. Arkadi The historic Monastery at Arkadi (approximately 10 kms south west of Agia Triada) is the most venerated symbol of freedom in Crete and lies in beautiful surroundings. Chania Chania (pronounced Harnia) is a city of unique beauty, filled with an abundance of fragrant flowers, and boasting a rich cultural heritage. Argiroupoli This small village, about 27 kms southwest of Rethymnon, is close to the ancient site of Lappa, which is currently being excavated. Lake Kourna A local beauty spot (this is a beautiful lake in a mountain bowl) and a picturesque suntrap. There are Tavernas, shops and a beach. You can also take a boat out across the Lake, or go snorkelling. The water in the summer looks emerald.
Rethymno / Agia Triada Village area
Agia Triada is a lovely old village with a church and taverna for those evenings when you don't wish to drive into town. The closest beach is at the resort of Platanias (only 5 km's away) where there is the longest sandy beach ever! 20 kms! The resort itself has everything you need for a day at the beach, with water sports, bars and restaurants and shops. And it is only a few minutes away!
Eating Out You will never tire of tavernas, bars and restaurants close to Agia Triada. Stratos's taverna in Tsesmes is particularly recommended - many English people go there for the excellent great value food, the atmosphere, very reasonable drinks and the welcome you receive. The service is terrific and the owner and his wife are very accommodating. If it's not on the menu, just ask!
For a Traditional English breakfast, try Stavros's Kellari restaurant in Platanes. It is about 50 metres from Galaxy Car Hire on the right hand side and serves breakfast from about 10.00 am. Very good value, and handy for the supermarket - the best in Platanes is right across the street from the restaurant.
Places to Visit
Rethymnon Overflowing with history and its amazing Venetian and Turkish architecture, Rethymnon is built around the harbour with its bustling harbour life. This traditional town is packed with atmosphere, the second largest in Crete, where narrow, shop-lined alleyways and beautiful old houses mix with bars, restaurants and tavernas. There is a lively nightlife here with a range of discos and clubs, if you fancy a night out. The beachfront promenade boasts more shops, bars and tavernas. The beach, which extends east for 14 kms, starts in the middle of the town. If you decide to eat in Rethymnon, you must try the fish dishes; the freshly caught fish is mouth-watering!.
Turtles The beach from Rethymnon eastwards is well known for nest sites for loggerhead turtles. In fact, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece was set up to protect them, and volunteers cordon off the nests and when the young hatch and emerge at night, the volunteers make sure that they make their way back to the sea. The lights of Rethymnon confuse the young turtles and they would otherwise head for the town rather than the open sea.
How to get there
You can fly from most airports to Heraklion or Chania with BA, Olympic, Easyjet to Athens and then Olympic and many others. Car hire available from Euro car hire, Galaxy car hire and many others that can be found on the internet, there are also car hire companies at the airport. There are also Taxis at the airports but they charge around €55, if you wished to go this way we could take you down to arrange car hire when you arrive at the villa.
Directions from the airports are: Proceed from Heraklion on the national road towards Rethymno and Chania for approx 80 kilometres (50 miles) and look for the right turn signposted Platanias (Platanias) and Arkadi. Turn right and proceed to the bottom of the road (approx 100 metres, be careful of the deep drains across the road). This is Platanes (Platanias). Galaxy Car Hire is on the right corner at the bottom. To the right is the resort with all the shops, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants and roads to the beach. Turn left and almost immediately left again on the Arkadi road. Follow this road for approximately 3.5 kms. Pass under the bridge and on the left hand bend look out for LIDL on your right, your nearest bulk supermarket. Keep on this road, without turning off, through Tsesmes and Adele. Immediately after Adele look for this signpost in Greek: Take the turning to the right for Agia Triada. Keep on this road for approximately 2.5 kms. You will notice that the road begins to climb somewhat, because Agia Triada is in the hills. After about 2.5 kms, you will come to an orange bin by the right side of the road under a Telegraph Pole with a sharp turning (doubling back on itself) to the right. Turn right here. Be prepared for a steep climb (first or second gear only). After the villa on the left, take the first sharp left turn and follow this road for approximately 100 metres, Triada Views is the first villa on the left where someone will meet you with the keys to Villa Alexandra

Guestbook
Submitted by Xanthe from Birmingham, West Midlands: "The view was amazing, a car is essential and the roads are fun to drive. The villa is very well decorated and I am pleased to say we were the first there and to christen the bbq. We will return again as a week is not long enough."
Submitted by Steven from St Andrews Scotland "Enjoyed our stay at Villa Alexandra, the views are wonderful. We were lucky that the other villas next to us were empty so it was quite and relaxing which is just what we were looking for. The weather was nice and hot but the breeze kept the temperature just perfect. The pool was nice to use to cool off when it got too hot. You will need a car to travel around and the road up to the villa is pretty steep, 1st gear only, what fun."
Submitted by Ian from Surrey "A very well equipped and presented villa set in the hills with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. A perfect place to return to at the end of a busy day on the beach or touring the island. The downside of the isolated location is that there are no local amenities within walking distance. Plus the access road is very steep. Ideal for friends/familiies renting the whole place as one unit. Overall, great value for money. "
Value: Excellent, Met expectations: Yes - satisfied, Recommend: Yes, Overall: Good
Owner reply: We are really pleased that our clints enjoyed their stay at Villa Alexandra but would disagree regarding the Isolated location as the closest shop is only 3 minutes drive away and the local town with shops, bars and a beach is only 5 minutes drive away. We would agree that the road up the villa is steep but once you arrive at the villa the views are fantastic and you can see for miles.
