Sfakaki is about an hour's drive away from Heraklion Airport and 20 minutes drive from Rethymno on the north/west coast of Crete. The people in this area are renowned for their hospitality and traditional atmosphere which has not changed over decades.
The area lies in a very fertile valley between Mount Ida and the White Moutains and gives easy access to the South of the Island via the main road out of Rethymno so is very central for exploring the western side of Crete. The main town had a very cosmopolitan feel and offers a variety of tavernas and restaurants to suit all tastes.
The Rethymno / Sfakaki area
The nearest beach is 800m down the road. The Village of Sfakaki and nearby Stavremenos offer excellent facilities with at least 8 tavernas, 2 supermarkets, petrol station. The nearest village is Sfakaki about 15 minutes walk down the hill towards the sea. Inland villages include Pigi which is about 20 minutes drive where there is a bakery, 2 butchers shops, supermarket, chemist and two tavernas, both of which serve excellent food. In amongst all the old rambling buildings you will find an internet cafe.
Rethymno town has two parts, old and new and there is a regular bus service along the old main road to town. The beautiful 'old town' area has a strong Venetian influence and lovely unspoilt harbour area, with rambling cobbled streets that lead to a small square with a fountain and small harbour area. All the dining tables and chairs spill out onto the pavements in the evening creating a very cosy friendly atmosphere. The up beat bar area is around the old Fortress and the upper part of the harbour. The new area offers a wide variety of shops, including a cinema showing English films with Greek subtitles. There is a 'little train' running along the old road which also takes you to town and into the surrounding countryside to visit the Monastery of Arkadi.
There are so many other places of interest in the surrounding area, such as the famous Minoan palace of Knossos, walking through the Samaria Gorge, Margarites where the pottery is still made the traditional way, Matala, the old hippie beach on the South side of the Island and many more.

We stayed in the villa for a week. It was set in a beautiful location with amazing views of the sea and the mountains. The villa itself was perfectly appointed with everything you would need for a family of 4. We were 'out of season' but everyone was very welcoming. Eric who looks after the villa was brilliant when we had a problem with our hire car and it seemed nothing was too much trouble. A car is essential to fully appreciate the area, the local area hold some real jewels, lake kourna and Rethyminon castle being 2 highlights for us. The swimming pool, although too cold whilst we were there was a real bonus for the villa. We would highly recommend this villa to families visiting Crete as it was not too far from the airport and allowed good access to the main routes around the island. Welook forward tobour next visit.

“pleasent,quite stay”
had a pleasent quite stay and villla was well eqipped. If i was staying in july/august i think the 1 air con unit in lounge/kitchen would be insufficiant to cool down property. This aside we had a great holiday.
Response: As not everybody likes air-conditioning, we have gone for the option of having ceiling fans in all rooms. We have had mixed response but 2012 was a particularly hot summer.

“A Tranquil peaceful location.”
A nicely appointed Villa with modern appliances, Plenty of hot water via the solar water heating, so we didn`t need to use the immersion heater at all. For the infirm, the steps might be a little steep but otherwise we couldn`t fault the place. The property appeared to be still quite new, with no issues, a well kept place.
We stayed at this villa in September and it was even better than we expected. The villa is set in idyllic surroundings with views of olive groves and the sea in the distance. We watched many beautiful sunsets from the roof terrace. The villa itself is very spacious, clean and well equipped. We didn't need to use the air conditioning as the ceiling fans kept the villa lovely and cool.We slept well in comfortable beds. The large shared pool was very clean and we had it mainly to ourselves for most of the holiday as we rarely saw the other occupant. The local beach was clean and uncrowded and a pleasant walk down the hill. On arrival we found the villa easily in the dark due to good directions. The only problem we encountered was we couln't find the gate to the property in the dark, as it is just an opening in the wire fence. The owner was helpful and always replied to e- mails,if we return to Crete we would love to stay here again.
Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in our Villa and that everything was to your liking. We have now installed a sensor light on the side on the house which will illuminate the gate on dark evenings.

“We had agreat time at Villa Bamanifa”
It was exactly what we wanted Quiet, secluded and peaceful but with access to bars and restaurants when required. It was great to sit out in the evening but the air conditioning struggled to cool the two bedrooms. The villa was neat and functional with lots of space. The views from the roof were exceptional.

“Fantastic, well appointed villa in a quiet location but easy access to many sites & beaches.”
A well appointed villa with plenty of space for a family of four to relax & enjoy. All kitchen appliances provided so felt like home from home. The only slight criticism we had was that we found the air conditioning unit was not strong enough to cool the bedrooms even after 2 or 3 hours, and, not wanting to spend minimum £10 a night to attempt keep it cool, we just opted for relying solely on the fans during the night which, on occasion, was too hot. We visited Hania (lovely old capital city) Knossos (sadly now cannot see some of the best rooms as preserved for the fututre generations) Kournas Lake (great fun to hire a pedalo on the island's biggest fresh water lake) and lots of lovely beaches - Bali beach is worth a visit but we preferred the beaches on the south coast - Preveli, Skinaria & Frankocastello definitely all deserve a visit. Imbros gorge also fantastic & only 8km so an easy family walk. Recommend Castelvecchio restaurant for a beautiful meal (90 euros for 4 of us) - just below the fort in Rethymno - fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor & in Lonely Planet guide.
“Smart, clean, modern bungalow in quiet and relaxing surroundings - close enough to all holiday amenities.”
Far enough away from the 'holiday strp' to be quiet and relaxing, but only 5-10 minutes from major resorts. We hired car, but there areregular bues (which we used of an evening) to visit other resorts - excellent vaule at less than a couple of euros.
The apartment is excellent and provides everything you will need - including air-con (1E per hour) - which is welcome on a hot night!
On the doorstep is a few local tavernas - our favorite (and that of the locals) was Dimitries, which has its own roasting spit - the meats were fresh and superbly cooked.

“Vines,olives and the odd goat.”
Lovely villa set in between vines and olives, tastefully furnished with attention to detail. Deceptively spacious and a really comfortable bed! Perfect place to chill out and what better start to the day than to open the door and jump straight into the pool. If you can tear yourself away there are lots of interesting places to visit in the area. Excellent value for money.

“Quite relaxing holiday”
Definitely need a car. Roads a bit tricky until you get used to the surroundings, then quite handy. We enjoyed the restaurant Levantes by the old road to Rethymno, direction Rethymno very much. Good value for money and good service. A great local shop for most things by the old road, direction Heraklion next to the Shell gas station, open daily. Great Feta cheese from service desk and fresh fruit and vegetables. Very handy and popular amongst local people.
“Absolutely amazing - will definitely be going back!”
We had a wonderful stay at Villa Bamanifa with my parents and young daughter. It was exactly what we were looking for - peaceful, relaxing, close to all the local amenities and with a pool. You definitely need a hire car during your stay here as there is not a huge amount within walking distance but there is loads on offer just a 5/10 minute drive away. Crete is very well set up for young children, with many restaurants having little play areas to keep the children entertained and swing parks etc. Booking and arranging check in/out times was very well organised and we found that all of the places recommended by the owners were excellent so, if you do stay here, take note of the recommended restaurants/day trips etc. The villa and pool were very clean and had everything we needed (save only for a cheese grater!).

“Tranquility in well-equipped comfort”
Hidden away along a narrow lane on the outskirts of Rethymno, this is a modern and well-equipped little villa. It is quiet, and offers tranquility and a place for relaxation as well as being an ideal base for visiting the Rethymo province and all it has to offer. Access to the villa is along a paved footpath with 3 short sets of steps, so remember you'll have to haul all your luggage down and then back up! Also, remember to take a small torch with you as it is very dark along this footpath at night, and you'll need to be able to see the steps and also the key-safe numbers!! The patio / pool area has the sun all day (apart from first thing in the morning) and is a real sun-trap. Four sun-loungers are provided as well as a good sized patio table and 4 chairs and - an ideal touch - a rotary washing line and pegs! There is a further sun-area on the roof terrace with spectacular views across the countryside to the sea and the mountains beyond. There are lockable shutters to every window. There is also a large shutter for the patio doors, which you should close with care to avoid 'rope burn'. There is an older-style TV which has mostly Greek news channels, along with a good DVD player which also takes USB. There is a ghetto-blaster style radio/CD player. A selection of DVD's and CD's is provided (mostly the free Sunday paper giveaway type, but adequate enough). The shower is a little small, but it is quite powerful and there is plenty of hot water. The kitchen is excellent with just about everything you could need and a good sized fridge-freezer. The main living area and both bedrooms have overhead ceiling fans. There is also air-con, but we didn't need to use this. The information we received from the owners was comprehensive, and the directions were excellent. There are some guidebooks and leaflets in the villa which were also very useful. Overall I would heartily recommend this villa for anyone wanting some peace and quiet and for families with older (8+) children, but access would be difficult for anyone with mobility difficulties. There are shops, supermarkets cafes, tavernas, beach access and bars along the Old Road a very short drive away, which we enjoyed. There're also go-karts and a few crazy-golfs. All the main resort facilities are in Rethymno which is about a 15/20 minute drive away, or an easy bus ride. Go inland and you are in the mountains with breathtaking scenery, tiny villages and historical sites. The roads are good, but drive carefully!

“Great place for a vacation”
My wife and I and a friend visited Crete so that our frirend could attend her stepson's wedding taking place at a Rethimno hotel. We found the villa convenient for this purpose and for exploration around the area. The villa was well appointed and suited our visit admirably. There were a number of restaurants within walking distance and the locals were friendly and helpful. We will definately visit again.
We booked the villa online and were looking for somewhere quiet we could relax with our 2 year old daughter. The villa is lovely with a nice pool which is cleaned regulalrly, it is part of a complex of 8 villas but is in a nice quiet area away from town and main roads. You will need a car to get to anywhere but that wasn't an issue for us as we wanted to explore the island.
The villa was clean with all necessary appliances including a washing machine which was a must for us with a little girl and meant we didn't need to pack huge amounts of clothes.
They have a dvd player with a good selection of kids movies to keep the little ones entertained when you want them out of the hottest of the sun.
Ceiling fans kept us cool in the bedrooms and there is air conditioning in the lounge.
Overlall we were very happy and I would recommend the villa to anyone looking for a nice quiet base from which to explore Crete.

“very comfortable apartment in good location”
On arrival we found the apartment to be well equiped and very clean. It is located near enough to restaurants, supermarkets and other facilities but far enough away so that it is very quiet. I would recommend that a car is hired for the full durathon and makes sence as a taxi is 90e each way from the airport. There is plenty to do and see, lots of different beaches, villages, historical sites, towns, villages, waterparks etc but also it is lovely to laze around the pool which is well maintained. We had a lovely time.

“Relaxing Holiday in Crete”
My mother was visiting from South Africa and my partner and I were looking for a relaxing get away for the 3 of us- Billa Bamanifa offered the perfect balance as it was located in a quiet, tranquil area, but was still close enough to the beach and local ammentities. It was clean, neat and had all the essentials, as well as a wonderful swimming pool that we used to full advantage to get respite from the heat. The owners left a comprehensive manual on how to easily access all that Crete had to offer which ensured that we got the maximum out of our stay. Thank you- we will definately recommend this Villa in the future.
“Perfect in every way - peaceful location and excellent villa.”
The villa has every possible home comfort provided. It is immaculately clean and set in a wonderfully peaceful and rural location away from the busy town of Rethymno, which is only about 10 minutes drive. The village itself has all shopping requirements and lovely tavernas but it is nice to be away from the main hub of the town. A car is necessary though and the villa is difficult to find on first arrival but once visitors have got their bearings it is in a very good location for exploring the whole of the area (central/western Crete). It is a downhill stroll to the beach which takes about 10 minutes. We would definitely recommend to friends and family and will certainly be going back ourselves.

“Home from home with the added bonus of nice weather!”
We arrived to a well equiped, clean and comfy villa and settled in instantly. Lovely and peaceful and the pool was a great bonus. It is perfectly located for easy access to all local shops, Lidl for stocking up on cheap food and water, beaches and tavernas. Would recommend the taverna Eleven, very good price and food excellent plus it has a playground for kids and is right on the beach. Another place is Poppys along the old road, also with a playground, food was very good and cheap, both places very friendly. Have a go at the language as they will love you for it, The little green train trips are well priced and worth doing. There are plenty of brochures in the villa for trips, we have left a leaflet for the Cretaquarium, which was worth a visit. We are definitely coming back to stay in this villa, a home from home with everything you would need to make your holiday perfect.
The owner is based in the United Kingdom and has advertised with Holiday Lettings since 2009. This bungalow has received 17 reviews from previous guests.
