The Crete region

Sfakaki is about an hour's drive away from Heraklion Airport and 20 minutes drive from Rethymno on the north/west coast of Crete. The people in this area are renowned for their hospitality and traditional atmosphere which has not changed over decades.
The area lies in a very fertile valley between Mount Ida and the White Moutains and gives easy access to the South of the Island via the main road out of Rethymno so is very central for exploring the western side of Crete. The main town had a very cosmopolitan feel and offers a variety of tavernas and restaurants to suit all tastes.
The Rethymno / Sfakaki area
The nearest beach is 800m down the road. The Village of Sfakaki and nearby Stavremenos offer excellent facilities with at least 8 tavernas, 2 supermarkets, petrol station. The nearest village is Sfkaki about 15 minutes walk down the hill towards the sea. Inland villages include Pigi which is about 20 minutes drive where there is a bakery, 2 butchers shops, supermarket, chemist and two tavernas, both of which serve excellent food. In amongst all the old rambling buildings you will find an internet cafe.
Rethymno town has two parts, old and new and there is a regular bus service along the old main road to town. The beautiful 'old town' area has a strong Venetian influence and lovely unspoilt harbour area, with rambling cobbled streets that lead to a small square with a fountain and small harbour area. All the dining tables and chairs spill out onto the pavements in the evening creating a very cosy friendly atmosphere. The up beat bar area is around the old Fortress and the upper part of the harbour. The new area offers a wide variety of shops, including a cinema showing English films with Greek subtitles. There is a 'little train' running along the old road which also takes you to town and into the surrounding countryside to visit the Monastery of Arkadi.
There are so many other places of interest in the surrounding area, such as the famous Minoan palace of Knossos, walking through the Samaria Gorge, Margarites where the pottery is still made the traditional way, Matala, the old hippie beach on the South side of the Island and many more.

My wife and I and a friend visited Crete so that our frirend could attend her stepson's wedding taking place at a Rethimno hotel. We found the villa convenient for this purpose and for exploration around the area. The villa was well appointed and suited our visit admirably. There were a number of restaurants within walking distance and the locals were friendly and helpful. We will definately visit again. |

We booked the villa online and were looking for somewhere quiet we could relax with our 2 year old daughter. The villa is lovely with a nice pool which is cleaned regulalrly, it is part of a complex of 8 villas but is in a nice quiet area away from town and main roads. You will need a car to get to anywhere but that wasn't an issue for us as we wanted to explore the island. The villa was clean with all necessary appliances including a washing machine which was a must for us with a little girl and meant we didn't need to pack huge amounts of clothes. They have a dvd player with a good selection of kids movies to keep the little ones entertained when you want them out of the hottest of the sun. Ceiling fans kept us cool in the bedrooms and there is air conditioning in the lounge. Overlall we were very happy and I would recommend the villa to anyone looking for a nice quiet base from which to explore Crete. |

On arrival we found the apartment to be well equiped and very clean. It is located near enough to restaurants, supermarkets and other facilities but far enough away so that it is very quiet. I would recommend that a car is hired for the full durathon and makes sence as a taxi is 90e each way from the airport. There is plenty to do and see, lots of different beaches, villages, historical sites, towns, villages, waterparks etc but also it is lovely to laze around the pool which is well maintained. We had a lovely time. |

We arrived to a clean, well equipped Villa, it felt like a home from home and we soon settled in. We have 2 small boys which were catered for with plenty of DVDs to watch. The Villa was in a central location making it perfect for exploring the surrounding areas but also well within walking distance of the beach and shops too.
A good place to visit if you have children is the Cretaquarium. Tavernas to try are Eleven, which has a small playground, the food was superb and Poppys, also with a small playground, again the food was lovely. I would recommend coming to stay here, and we will be returning in the near future. Sharon Patching and family -

Just wanted to say thank youvery much for letting us stay in your villa. We had a great holiday and we thought Crete was very beautiful. The location was perfect- very peaceful, and we managed to visit some of the delightful local restaurants & sights. We look forward to visiting Crete again soon!Kind regards,
Ian & Sharon
What a Gem you have there! We had an absolutely brilliant time. Such a peaceful location and the villa was perfect - you had thought of everything. Thank you so much. We're already thinking about next year. We know we're going to Hungary to meet our son's fiancee's parents in May/June but possibly a week in September.....
Saw so much of the island this time round with the car. We also managed to survive the Samaria Gorge - spectacular but we did ache for three days afterwards - thank goodness for the pool to relieve those muscles!
Best wishes Pat & Paul
We had a lovely time, thank you! We found the Villa really well maintained, had everything we needed and we were really very comfortable there. The local restaurants were superb, the beaches were lovely and the weather could not have been better. Thanks Again, we will definitely recommend the Villa in the future!Kind Regards
Dani
We had a lovely time, thank you. The villa was a lovely welcome after our journey. Agnes is very good, I wanted to bring her home with me! Both her and her son were also very helpful with information etc.
It was so nice being able to step out of your front door onto the loungers or for the children straight into the pool and to be able to see them if we were inside. Karen Harding
Yes we had a wonderful time thank you. Villa was just perfect for us. Best wishes and thanks again. Mike
Hello Marilyn -Yes, we had another good stay and the weather was kind albeit it was beginning to break as we were leaving. Kind regards Graham

Our stay was very pleasant Thanks and regards, Janis Latvia
Just like to say we had a really good time in crete and the villa made our holiday extra special, its a beautiful place located in the perfect area. Couldnt ask for anything else. Thank you for all the help with bookings and details as this was our first holiday to crete so it was all confusing at first , but you made it all clear to us. We look forward to booking your villa again in the future !!Thank you again Rob and family England
The location of the house was nice. Close to all commodities, but in a quiet and peaceful area. The traveller book about Creta you left was very useful. We discovered many hidden gems of Creta with the help of
this book.We had in fact a very nice time in Crete and in your villa. Thanks again, and looking forward to come back to crete. Best Regards Renaud Delbru
Nice and clean, smart and modern, close enough to beach and bus stop and it was nice returning to a quieter area after nights out in Rethymno etc. The only criticism we had was that the directions were really hard to follow as there were none of the signs that the info said there would be when we came into Stfkaki. We had to ring Linda once we had driven up and down the road about 4 times trying to find it! (We have put some additional signs up) Other than that - FABULOUS so thank you very much!Kind Regards,Kate
enjoyed our stay at the villa.really enjoyed the comfortable sofas and the cosy homely feeling of the bungalow.
regards barbara,chris and victoria
We had an enjoyable holiday in Crete and the accommodation and facilities were more than adequate.
The location was good for both beach and exploring and with the weather particularly hot, a dip in the pool
two or three times a day was most welcoming. Plenty of tavernas and bars within easy reach, although we would consider a car a necessity. Many thanks Richard and Penny Grove 09.09.10
We had a wonderful time the house was just perfect for us..........cliff
The villa is a tardis!....We walked up to the door thinking it was going to be small but when we opened up the door was pleasantly surprised at how roomy the villa is,there were only 2 of us but we could have easily brought the family as there was so much room. In the villa there is everything you need and more, even a hairdryer! Books to read,cd's to listen to and even a selection of dvd's if the weather is too hot for you or the keep the kids amused in the evening while you are sat on the roof terrace having a glass of ouzo and watching the amazing sunsets. There is a pool that is shared with a sister villa but it is big enough for everyone to use and is very clean and well maintained as is the villa. We have spent many years travelling across Greece and to be honest this villa was cheaper and much more comfortable than most hotels we have booked over the years,I would not hesitate to recommend the villa to friends and family Carol Merchant Waddesdon Bucks.
The villa was very nice, very well appointed and comfortable. The location was ideal for us. As a result the few suggestions hereunder are very minor and probably reflect personal preference more than anything else. If you felt you didn't want to pursue any of them it would not spoil a return visit: we would have liked a bedside light on both sides of the double bed (will sort in Spring for next season) provision of a teapot would have been nice (again will sort in Spring) the non-stick frying pan is no longer non-stick. Someone has been far too vigorous in their cleaning of the pan and removed most of the surface (this has already been changed). We intend to return to walk some of the gorges so I will retain your contact details if I may for a future visit. We have some other plans for 2011 so it will likely be 2012. Kind regards Graham
