The Yorkshire region
The Yorkshire Dales is home to the renowned Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is characterised by its unspoilt Dales villages, patchwork of dry stone walls and stunning fells and dales countryside. Surrounded by magnificent views in every direction, the area is dotted with ancient farming communities and rural villages which is typical of this region.
This is the ideal place to stay if you're looking for a relaxing 'get away from it all' break, trying new adventurous outdoor pursuits or taking in the local landscape, towns and villages with their plethora of quaint shops, tea rooms, public houses, restaurants and historic fortifications.
Swaledale is the most northerly of the major Dales within the National Park and has, for many people a special magic, with generations of visitors, including writers, painters and photographers, entranced by its intimate beauty.
The best way to experience this special landscape is to explore the network of public footpaths, quiet lanes, byways and bridleways either on foot, by horse or bicycle, a testimony to this is the fact that Wainwrights Coast to Coast passes through this area and Reeth is proud to welcome Stage One of the Tour de France in July 2014.
Reeth is known as the 'capital of Swaledale' and is at the heart of the local farming community with a variety of shops, galleries and cafes amongst its 18th century houses and buildings. The triangular green at the centre of the town is host to many events throughout the year.
Apple Tree Cottage, in Marske, is approx.6 miles from Reeth and nestled amongst beautiful countryside in a very tranquil location, with a small group of cottages situated on the outskirts of the village. It boasts beautiful views across the valley of Marske Beck, a tributary of the River Swale. There are paths and trails which can be followed along the route of the beck, straight from your front door leading to idyllic picnic spots and old drovers bridges.
Ramblers and rabbits are the main source of traffic at the cottage, as there is no road access beyond this point.
Marske itself is a beautiful village easily accessed from the main Richmond to Reeth, with Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk passing through. It is also in an ideal location for accessing the quiet country lanes by bicycle. The Dales Bike Centre at Fremington, near Reeth has lots to offer as well cycle hire.
Richmond, approx. 6 miles east of Marske, is a bustling market town of great historic interest and host to Richmond Castle constructed on a steep crag high above the River Swale with breathtaking views from the Castle Keep. Richmond itself has lovely walks along the river to Easby Abbey and 'The Station' has been superbly restored as a lively heritage and community centre with a small cinema, shops, micro brewery, bakery, art gallery, cheese maker and ice-cream parlour.
