The Cumbria region
Mostly rural, Cumbria is one of the most beautiful regions of the UK and includes the whole of the Lake District, the Eden Valley (where our Cottage lies), the North Pennines and part of the Yorkshire Dales. There are many events and festivals in Cumbria, from the traditional agricultural shows (ours at Ravenstonedale being in August) to more recent ones such as local music festivals including Kendal Calling. A particularly close festival to us is the Appleby horse fair in June.
Brownber House is conveniently situated 6 miles from J38 of the M6 Motorway, at the foot of the Howgill Fells near the villages of Ravenstonedale and Newbiggin On Lune. The Lake District, Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales are all within easy reach and can be viewed from the Coast to Coast route within ½ mile of the house itself.
You can walk, cycle or run out onto the open fells from the doorstep.
Described by Wainwright as "often likened to a huddle of squatting elephants" the Howgill Fells are more undulating than the Lake District mountains but also less crowded. They therefore offer walkers brilliant walking opportunities with the possibility of isolation. There are approximately 40 summits of which several are over 2,000 feet.
The Lake District is easy enough to get to from Brownber by car. Even if you are not a walker, scenic circular drives taking in Kendal in the south to Keswick in the north make a great day out amid stunning scenery.
Orton (5 miles away) holds farmers' markets every second Saturday of every month and has a rather popular choclate shop and factory.
Ravenstonedale is a picturesque village 1 1/2 miles away, where there are some excellent pubs serving food including The Black Swan Hotel, The Kings Head Hotel and The Fat Lamb. There is a new cycle path from our village to Ravenstonedale for those who wish to cycle or walk to these.
There are restaurants, shops, a supermarket and banks in Kirkby Stephen (5 miles away). The railway station at Kirkby Stephen is on the famous Settle to Carlisle line. You can also take trips through The Dales on classic coaches from here.
Kendal is about 17 miles away and has a wide variety of shops, restaurants, supermarkets, a cinema, and a theatre. Sedbergh is only a short, scenic 10 mile drive away, alongside the Howgill Fells and is an attractive town famous for its secondhand book shops.

"Perfect spot for a weekend get-together"
Well presented house with good facilities in a secluded location in rolling fields. Great accommodation for children to explore and well set out for entertaining too. Well maintained gardens, although the slopes mean there is no obvious dining area. That said, the beer garden in The Black Swan (Ravenstonedale) is one of the best I've ever seen.

Great setting with good views of The Howgills and lots of walks none of which entailed road walking. Well laid out and nicely decorated rooms, plenty of space for all 9 0f us + baby. Plenty of bathrooms and a hot tub which was excellent. Owners could not have been better. Everyone wishes to return and repeat the experience.

"Large family accommodation in beautiful surroundings."
Our stay at Brownber house was just what we wanted as a family accommodation that kept all of us ( 12 ) under one roof for a wonderful holiday, the house is spacious and very homely with five bedrooms ( plus extra double futon ) set out in any orientation which suits your stay, two en suites to the master bedrooms and a family bathroom shower and separate toilet, laundry room....brilliant idea, and large kitchen with all the utensils you will ever require, and last but not least two very cosy family rooms with log fires. For the children the garden at the rear of the house is steep to play on but with permission over the dry stone wall is a slightly flatter field which you may be able to use, if not the local play area is only a few hundred meters away. Access to the Dales and lake district is easy from this location and I am sure we will certainly use Brownber house again in the future for a family get together. I would defiantly recommend this property. Thank you to our hosts.

"This is an excellent place to stay."
The hostesses were very welcoming. They made us feel very much at home and the cake with a cup of tea when we arrived was a lovely touch. The fires in the lounge and dining room added to the wonderful warm atmosphere Fantastic scenery and wonderful walking country. The property is spacious and well equipped and the owners will endeavour to find any piece of kitchen equipment should you ask. Lots of room for everyone to be able to find a quiet corner should they wish and for children to explore the house and grounds and work off any excess energy. The utility room is very spacious and very thoughtfully equipped to dry off walking clothes and boots.

"Good house, Good walks, Great stay"
A group of five friends rented the house as a base for a 3 night walking stay. We had a great time. The house was very well stocked and even gave us ample space for drying boots and jackets - it didn't rain much but was wet under foot. We lit log fires when we returned each day and enjoyed the games or watched tv. Brownber has masses of books and maps so don't worry about taking any. we did two 8 mile walks which gave lovely views even at low level. We even got to a stone circle.
